Tigerettes place six on all-district SB squads

After a school record season in both wins and district wins, Jacksboro’s Tigerettes placed six members on the District 8-3A Softball team announced earlier this week.

Youth was served on the squad as a number of sophomores and juniors were selected. Sophomore Maylan Armstrong was named utility player of the year. Armstrong pitched, played first base and some outfield for the squad.

First team accolades went to Hanah Drennan at pitcher and Trinity Tisdale at second base.

Track athletes heading to Austin

Nerves can be expected when heading to anything at the State level.

Jacksboro seniors Riley Rollans and Kaylea Maples have experienced the spotlight that is the State Track and Field Meet, which takes place this weekend at UT’s Myers Track and Field Stadium in Austin. The pair, along with Kade Weldon, will all be competing at 8 a.m. Saturday, the boys in the discus and Maples in the triple jump.

Maples qualified last year and admitted nerves kept her from doing her best. She says that won’t be an issue this year.

Tigers take bite out of Tolar

BROCK – Fernando Piedra has a new nickname to go along with his wellknown Ferdinand:

Clutch.

With the junior infielder and his Jacksboro teammates staring a game one loss to Tolar in the face last Friday, down 3-2 with two out and the bases full, Piedra was down to his final strike when he tore into a Dustin Twigg pitch well enough for a two-run single to commence a four run rally in what was a 6-3 game one win over the Rattlers.

Bryson drops Graford to qualify for playoffs

BOWIE – Note to baseball coaches: make sure your players know the signs.

Bryson junior Tanner Buchanan had the weight of the Cowboy world on his shoulders Monday evening, he and his teammates having come back from a 6-0, third-inning deficit to tie the game at seven in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases full and the winning run just 90 feet away, Buchanan was signaled to bunt by Head Coach Brent Tuel.

Thing is, Buchanan was unsure of the sign.

“I saw the sign and I hoped it was for a bunt, so I went with it,” Buchanan said. “It all worked out.”

Area tracksters qualify for State

All three Jack County schools will have representatives at the State Track Meet later this month by virtue of top two finishes in events at the regional meets last weekend.

Jacksboro landed three going to state, all seniors. Kade Weldon and Riley Rollans finished 1-2 in the discus event. Weldon threw a 167’2” and Rollans a 164’7” to qualify.

Senior Kaylea Maples qualified for state in the triple jump finishing second in the event with a 37’1”. Freshman Baylee Thompson was fifth in the shotput with a 37’1 1/2”.

Tigers to face Tolar Friday

Blake Belcher had an inkling this year’s edition of the Jacksboro baseball team could be pretty good.

It all started with a very strong second half of the 2016 season, where the Tigers went 5-2 to finish the district season at 7-7. While out of the postseason picture then, fans and supporters saw signs of things to come.

Those signs came to fruition last Friday night when Jacksboro clinched its first outright district championship since 2001. The Tigers will take a 16-10-2 overall mark into the bi-district round of the playoffs, which begins this evening in Brock.

DISTRICT CHAMPS

Just Another Day ...except for the District 8-3A championship.

Dio’s hard rock tune of the mid 80s spoke volumes Friday evening as Jacksboro’s varsity baseball squad, doing exactly what they had done to get to Friday’s district title showdown with Boyd, overcame a slow night at the plate and took advantage of opportunities provided by the visiting Yellowjackets to post a 6-0 win at a packed Tiger Field.
