Jacksboro bucked out of first in 5-3A DII, 55-20

EASTLAND – Jacksboro has never had good luck at Maverick Stadium. Last year during Homecoming 2019, the Tigers played a solid game and still wound up on the short end of a 39-21 stick.

Friday night, the Tigers were once again Eastland’s Homecoming game, only this time Jacksboro was plagued with nine turnovers which led to 42 Maverick points in a 55-20 game here.

Jacksboro goes to 2-1 in District 5-3A Division II and 5-3 overall with Eastland going to 3-0 and 5-3 overall.Jacksboro was able to keep Eastland contained for most of the night, even thing a lead after one.

Behren Morton’s pair of field goals put the hosts up 6-0 late in the first quarter. Jacksboro was able tome the ball well, using the rushing of Jordan Yount, Daylan Valles, Dylan Thomas, Landon Davenport, Trey-Laake to set the stage for an 8-yard run by Thomas for pay dirt. Davenport tacked on the extra point for a 7-6 lead with 6:53 left in the first half.

Over the next five minutes, Eastland would score three times, using two fumble recoveries one to set up a score and another that was recovered in the end zone. Jacksboro would have fumbles on its last three drives of the first half.

On the final drive, the Tigers moved the ball into Eastland terriitory only to have a completed pass knocked away and recovered but the Mavs tossed an incomplete pass to end the half.

Jacksboro marched 75 yards to open the second half, scoring on a fiveyard run by De’Trayvion Green. On the ensuing Tiger drive, the Purple fumbled on fourth down the ball being picked up and run back for a score.

Another Jacksboro fumble happened one play later with Morton finding Payton McLain for the first of two scores to end the third quarter.

Each team had a fourth quarter score, Hacksboro’s coming from backup quarterback Chris Wiggins’ five-yard run.

The Tigers return home for Senior Night vs. Comanche, a 26-15 winner over Millsap Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
