DISTRICT CHAMPS

Just Another Day ...except for the District 8-3A championship.

Dio’s hard rock tune of the mid 80s spoke volumes Friday evening as Jacksboro’s varsity baseball squad, doing exactly what they had done to get to Friday’s district title showdown with Boyd, overcame a slow night at the plate and took advantage of opportunities provided by the visiting Yellowjackets to post a 6-0 win at a packed Tiger Field.

Perrin SB wins district title

BRYSON – Perrin’s softballers were gunning for a perfect district season Saturday and had to go through Bryson, which had given them a battle in the first meeting in an 8-6 Lady Pirate victory, to complete the job.

Mission accomplished.

After a “come to Jesus” meeting in the early going, Perrin erupted for six runs in the second inning enroute to a 13-3, six-inning win over the Cowgirls. Perrin ends its regular season at 12-0 in district and 15-5 overall and faced Chico in the bi-district round of the playoffs Thursday night (no details available as of press time).

Perrin SB falls to Chico in bi-district

JACKSBORO –After an unbeaten district season, for the first time in school history, Perrin had to feel confident going into Thursday night’s bi-district matchup with Chico. The confidence was shortlived as the Lady Dragons picked enough hits and took advantage of eight Perrin miscues in an 11-1, five-inning win.

Perrin ends its season at 15-6 while Chico moves on to face the winner of Moody-San Saba in an area round matchup at 15-11. Lady Pirate Coach Ben Staggs said a lack of playoff experience showed.

JHS track sends athletes to regionals

Jacksboro will have five representatives attending this weekend’s Region I-3A Meet at Abilene Christian University by virtue of top four performances at area April 20 at the JHS track.

Seniors Kade Weldon and Riley Rollans finished 1-2 in the discus event. Cody Gary was fifth in the shotput in Javier Palomar finished 8th in the 3,200-meter run.

On the girls side, senior Kaylea Maples was 3rd in both the long and triple jump. Leah Plaster was 3rd in the shotput with freshman Baylee Thompson winning the discus and second in the shotput.

Senior night sweep of Holliday

Carly Hart, by virtue of being hit by a number of pitches this season, was the “ hit girl” in some fans’ eyes. Friday night, she became the “it” girl.

Jacksboro’s sophomore catcher’s RBI single capped a three-run fifth inning and proved to be the game winner as visiting Holliday came through with a seventh-inning rally that fell just short in a 6-5 Tigerette win. Both teams ended their District 8-3A ledgers at 6-8 and knocked the Lady Eagles from postseason play.

Jacksboro, with its 12-19 overall record, set school records for both overall and district wins this season.

Boys beat Paradise

PARADISE – It takes a lot of work to get through a district season.

Ups and downs happen to everyone, it’s just a question of plowing through it. Jacksboro’s baseball team has had more ups than downs in its 2017 District 8-3A campaign, being in a first-place tie with Boyd at 9-3 heading into the final week of the loop campaign.

Tuesday night, one of the recurring downs occurred as the Tigers had offensive problems, picking up just two hits in five innings. Fortunately, the host Panthers were having similar issues, keeping the squads scoreless heading into the sixth.

Bryson tracksters compete at district

BRYSON – Both Bryson track teams competed solidly at the district track meet they hosted April 13.

The boys won their portion with 166 points and qualified several members for the area meet held Wednesday in Graford (no results available as of press time). Ethan Robinson was second in the 400 meters with a 55.06 time and third in the 100 meters with a 12.08 time.

Perrin softballers stay atop loop

GRAFORD – Perrin continued its quest toward a perfect district season with a 13-4 win over the host Lady Rabbits April 14.

Perrin picked up all the runs it’d need in the first with a five-run atbat. The Lady Pirates added three in the third and one in the fourth.

Graford scored one fifth inning run to avoid the shutout. Perrin added five runs in the sixth to take a 13-1 lead. The hostesses tacked on three in the sixth to keep the game going a full seven frames.

Perrin slapped out 17 hits with Ashton Sims leading the way with four hits and a pair of RBIs.

Boys stay in first with 10-2 win

BOWIE – Mama said there’d be nights where you can’t find the strike zone.

Clay Botello knows the feeling, the junior pitcher having trouble getting command of his pitches Tuesday evening. While walking six in five innings of work, Botello and his defense were able to get out of jams while the Tigers got off to a quick start and made it stick in a 10-2 win over the Jackrabbits.

With the win, Jacksboro remained in a three-way tie for first with Holliday and Boyd at 8-3 in District 8-3A. Jacksboro is now 13-10-2 overall while Bowie slips to 6-5 and 11-14-1.
