Board of Zoning Adjustment grants variance

The Jacksboro Board of Zoning Adjustment hosted three public hearings Monday to consider variances from zoning ordinances.

Two of the variances involve property owners looking to sell alcoholic beverages.

Representatives for Allsups attended the meeting seeking a variance from the 300-foot rule the city council recently adopted. It states that a business cannot sell alcohol 300 feet, measured property line to property line, from a school or day care. 

Hospital Board elects new officers

Faith Community Hospital had the annual reorganization of its Board of Directors during Tuesday’s regular meeting.

After swearing in incumbent and Chairman Shelley Owen, Owen said she could not give as much to the position as she should give with her new job. She then nominated Lori McBrayer as new chairman which was seconded by Larry Hopwood. The motion was approved unanimously.

Edwina Swan and Mark Maples were re-elected to their positions as Vice President and Secretary, respectively.

Callan dock dedication set for Jan. 4

Plans for the dedication of the Johnny Callan Memorial Dock at Lake Jacksboro are underway and Callan’s mom, Kerri LeDoux said the event will be all that Johnny hoped for.

“He wanted it big and to have the fireworks and a cook-out and all these things and we told him, ‘We’re not going to be able to do all that.’ So it’s great that we’re going to get to do what he wanted,” LeDoux said.

The event will celebrate Johnny Callan’s hard work in fundraising and organization for the dock’s construction, his community project as one of 10 Texas FFA Ford Leadership Scholars.

Fire burns home west of Perrin

A fire Monday consumed a home in southern Jack County.

Firemen were dispatched to the scene of a structure fire approximately 4 miles west of Perrin on FM 2210 at about 4:45 p.m. Monday.

Jacksboro fireman Jason Jennings said the homeowner was in the house when it started.

“He was sitting in his living room when he heard a noise,” Jenning said. “He saw the back room was on fire.”

Two felony fugitives arrested for theft

Two individuals who had evaded the law for months were arrested late last week.

Larry Dale Langley Jr., 38, and Rebeckah Jean Koonce, 34, both of Jacksboro, were charged with theft of property greater than or equal to $2,500 to $30,000, a state jail felony and arrested Dec. 1.

There had been a warrant for Koonce’s arrest since Sept. 12 for the charge and one for Langley since Nov. 15.

Jacksboro Middle School completes first level in High Reliability Schools program

Beginning in the fall of 2015, Jacksboro Middle School was part of a pilot High Reliability Schools program offered through the Region 9 educational Service Center. Funded by the Priddy Foundation, HRS is a systematic program designed to create schools functioning at the highest level possible. There are five levels to the design with Level 1 being Safe and Collaborative schools.

Hospital ready for Shape Up

A Faith Community Hospital program that had a tremendous first year is back for its sophomore run.

Shape Up in Faith is beginning its second year with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Twin Lakes Activity Center, according to FCH Wellness Director Joe Copeland. Last year 196 people took part in the 12-week program and dropped 1,281 pounds.

“We don’t have any goals for this year, but we would certainly like to beat that,” Copeland said.

Fatal crash on Highway 281 Thursday morning

A woman was killed in a crash Thursday morning on Highway 281 just north of Jack County.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Dan Buesing reports that at approximately 11:30 a.m. Mary Laverne Bevers, 48, from Windthorst, was killed just south of Highway 16 while trying to enter her driveway.

Bevers collided with an 18-wheeler which was driving south in the northbound lane.

Bevers was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected from her pickup during the collision and pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.

Wichita Falls car chase ends in Jacksboro

A woman evaded police for more than an hour Wednesday night in a car chase that ended in Jacksboro.

DPS Trooper Dan Buesing said a DPS officer tried to stop Katrina Diane Slade, 24, of Wichita Falls, at about 8:50 p.m. on Kell West, US 277. 

“They went up and down Kell, got onto Kemp and road around multiple streets along Kell and Kemp,” Buesing said. “This went on for an hour and a half. There are too many streets to list where she went.”

Another tragedy strikes Callan family

A crash in Decatur Monday night claimed the life of John Joseph Callan. 

He was the father of Jacksboro student Johnny Callan who was killed in a crash south of Mineral Wells Nov. 26.

Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins said Callan, 43, of Decatur, was driving on Highway US 380 Business shortly before 9 p.m. when his vehicle left the road, went over two culverts becoming airborne over the fence into the baseball park.

The car flipped and landed upside down. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
