Sand volleyball tourney June 24

TNT Fest is coming up and the Swan Family Wellness Center is looking for sand volleyball players to take part in a tournament.

A sand volleyball tournament will begin at 11 a.m. June 24 at the courts at the Twin Lakes fields with co-ed teams of four (two males and two females) needed to compete. The cost is $40 per team with the winning team getting 20 percent of the proceeds with the runnerup getting its entry fee back.

'Camping' season opens with first pitch

Baseball is America’s pastime. About 40 boys (and girl) found out why earlier this week.

Jacksboro High Baseball Coach Blake Belcher hosted the school’s annual Baseball Camp May 30-June 1 and had about 40 kids sign up to learn more about the sport. After the success the high school Tigers had this year, falling in three games in the Region I quarterfinals, it bodes well for the future of the program to see players in grades 1-8 wanting to learn more.

JHS sports camps scheduled

Jacksboro summer sports camps are on tap for those interested in baseball, volleyball and girls basketball.

Baseball camp is set for 9 a.m. to noon May 30-June 1 at the Twin Lakes baseball fields for kids having just completed grades K-8. Completed forms and checks made out to Blake Belcher can be given to Belcher prior to camp or brought to the first morning of camp. Cost is $60 which includes a shirt.

Tiger baseball season ends in regional quarters

GRAFORD – Two-thirds of an inning does not a season make.

Many Tiger baseball fans have to be left wondering ‘what if’ following an 11-run sixth inning by Brock which ultimately sent Jacksboro to its demise Saturday afternoon here. Having only five hits over the first five frames thanks to pitching from Hunter Drennan and Fernando Piedra, the Eagles came through with nine hits in the sixth enroute to a 15-3, six inning win in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals.

Tigers even series with Brock

GRAFORD – They believed ... and they were right.

Jacksboro’s fan base, which has been unwavering in its support all year, began the “we believe” chant as Brock came to bat in the bottom of the 7th Friday night with the Tigers holding a 9-5 lead in game two of the best-of-three series. With reliever Luke Dixon on the mound, Brock struck for a run on two hits in the inning with still two outs to get.

FORT WORTH – When you’re young, the learning curve can be quite large.

Jacksboro is in the middle of what Coach Blake Belcher calls a three-year learning curve. His Tigers headed into a regional quarterfinal series Thursday night with perennial state contender Brock not sure of what to expect.

Bryson, Perrin SB All-District

After successful seasons came to an end, the District 11-2A softball teams had a number of Perrin and Bryson players named to it.

Perrin won the Class 2A portion of the loop, going unbeaten in the process, and had a number of players named to superlatives, includng sophomore pitcher Kaylie Anderson as MVP and freshman Kelli Tucker as Newcomer of the Year. Catcher of the Year went to Blake Gaskill with Ben Staggs selected as Coach of the Year.

Bryson BB falls to Avalon

SPRINGTOWN – Any time you have more errors than hits, it’s a pretty ominous sign it won’t be a good day.

Bryson was in that boat Friday night after its game one of its best of three area round playoff series with Avalon. Bryson had just three hits but four errors in the game. The Eagles had just four hits themselves but took advantage of the Cowboy errors in a 6-0 win.

JHS athletes honored during Assembly

Jacksboro athletes were honored during the annual Academic and Athletic Awards Assembly May 11.

It’s been an up and down year for the Purple, going to the playoffs in a number of sports and just missing out in others. Craig Adkins guided his girls golf team, which included four freshmen, to a second-place district finish and 8th place at regionals. The squad showed promise for the future, cutting 83 strokes off their team score from their first tournament until regionals.

“By pulling together like that, they exemplified what a team truly is,” Adkins commented.

Jacksboro BB moves into regional quarterfinals

ABILENE – Sometimes enough is enough.

After a nip and tuck battle with Tuscola Jim Ned in game one of the best-of-three series May 11, Jacksboro took a day off to regroup Friday and came out Saturday at McMurry’s Walt Driggers Field ready to take care of business, jumping out to a 12-2 fifth inning lead and being one out away from ending the game on mercy rule.
