Texas Football makes predictions

If one preseason magazine is correct, each Jack County football team is headed back to the postseason in a repeat of 2016. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football has Jacksboro and Perrin squeaking into the playoffs in their respective districts while Bryson opens the preseason with a state ranking. The magazine’s thoughts start here: Jacksboro (262) Lettermen R/L 14/10.

Summer SB routs Millsap

In the season finale, June 29, Jacksboro’s summer league softball team and their fans had the opportunity to check out the future ... and it is good. Some freshman newcomers had their chance to show their stuff vs. Millsap, as the Tigerettes struck early and often to give the neophytes the opportunity to shine in an 18-4, four-inning victory over the visitors. Jacksboro scored the maximum of five runs per inning three times, stroked out nine hits and took advantage of four Lady ‘Dog errors. The Tigerettes picked up all the offense they’d need in the first.

JHS football camp

Jacksboro Football Camp is scheduled July 31-Aug. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon daily at Tiger Stadium. Camp is for those going into grades 3-8. Basic football skills along with the life skills of teamwork, character, and leadership will be taught during daily drills. Cost is $30 per camper with registration before camp being done by mailing a check in care of Jacksboro Athletics to Brannon Rodgers, 109 Mockingbird Lane, Jacksboro, 76458.

Teen Boot Camp starts July 6

A successful program started by Faith Community Hospital last year has been expanded with the opening of the Swan Family Wellness Center.

Teen Boot Camp will run Tuesdays and Thursday from 1-2 p.m.  through the month of July at the Wellness Center behind the hospital. Wellness Director Joe Copeland said the program is completely free for those in grades 6-12 and had about 25-30 kids last year attending consistently. With the opening of the center, Copeland is hoping for more this year.

Rodeo results released

Results for the annual Jack County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo are as follows:

In bareback riding, Tyler Johnson won with a score of 73 with Leighton Berry second with a score of 65. Laney Fowler won the barrel racing event with a time of 15.61 with Jackie McMinn second with a time of 15.625. Cheyenne Baldwin was third with a time of 15.81.

Kids attend, VB, BB camps

More than 50 students came out for Jacksboro basketball and volleyball camp Monday morning.

The camp, which ran through Wednesday, was split up into two sections. Campers were split up into two groups by age.

One group honing their volleyball skills with Head JHS Volleyball Coach Rosana Barbosa and the other going into the back gym to show their hoop skills and see how to improve them with Head Girls Basketball Coach Todd Matlock and his staff. The camps switched mid morning with the older kids learning volleyball and the younger ones learning basketball.

Sand volleyball tourney June 24

TNT Fest is coming up and the Swan Family Wellness Center is looking for sand volleyball players to take part in a tournament.

A sand volleyball tournament will begin at 11 a.m. June 24 at the courts at the Twin Lakes fields with co-ed teams of four (two males and two females) needed to compete. The cost is $40 per team with the winning team getting 20 percent of the proceeds with the runnerup getting its entry fee back.

'Camping' season opens with first pitch

Baseball is America’s pastime. About 40 boys (and girl) found out why earlier this week.

Jacksboro High Baseball Coach Blake Belcher hosted the school’s annual Baseball Camp May 30-June 1 and had about 40 kids sign up to learn more about the sport. After the success the high school Tigers had this year, falling in three games in the Region I quarterfinals, it bodes well for the future of the program to see players in grades 1-8 wanting to learn more.
