PERRIN – Sometimes it can be one shot in the middle of a game that falls which can turn things around.
Such was the case Dec. 1, as Perrin which had problems getting shots to fall in the first half but still managed to lead by three, 17-14 at the half. The teams traded buckets until Kolby Burke’s three-pointer gave Perrin its largest lead of the game at 26-19.
This late third quarter basket sparked the Pirates into a big fourth quarter and gave Perrin a 49-36 victory over Chico. Perrin remains perfect on the season at 4-0.
Pirate Coach Todd McCormick said he simply told his troops to plug away.
“Our shots weren’t falling but I told the kids to keep plugging,” McCormick said. “The flow of the game can change on just one shot and it can affect play on both sides of the ball.”
While the flow didn’t change until the start of the fourth, Perrin’s defense did kick up after the Burke shot. Perrin took a 30-24 lead into the final quarter. Keaton Burke’s three-pointer and a Connor Ford basket nearly doubled the lead in the first 43 seconds to 35-24.
Free throws by Mike Goodman and Tyce Lambert extended the lead to 45-28 midway through the fourth. Chico wouldn’t get closer than 12 the rest of the way.
Chico sent Perrin to the foul line 32 times in the game. That started early, as the Dragons were burned for four fouls in the game’s first 1:45.
It took some time to get rolling, as Perrin was 4-15 at the line in the first half … and 14-17 in the second half which enabled the Pirates to all away.
Ford had 16 points and Lambert 13 for the Pirates. T.J. Milam led a balanced Dragon attack with eight points.
