Jacksboro was expected to be a faster team than in years past. Just how much faster the Tigerettes will be remains to be seen.
The Purple wasted little time in taking control Friday night vs. Electra, getting out to a 20-0 lead barely six minutes in and not letting off the gas in a 68-17 win that puts the Purple at 4-3.
Jacksboro Coach Kyle Wood said getting his younger players some court time will only help once district play begins next week.
Wood said Electra using a 2-3 zone, which the squad hadn’t seen much, gave them a chance to react to something different. He also was pleased with the way his squad attacked the rim against the Lady Tigers.
Senior Alex Holman led the first quarter charge with 10 points while junior Traci Berend scrapped and fought her way to six first quarter points, literally taking the ball away from an Electra player after a rebound and putting it back for a basket.
Wood likes her aggressive nature and the way she seems to actually enjoy the role.
Electra finally got on the board with 17 seconds left in the first after missing its first four shots from the floor. Jacksboro converted 9-19 of its flirst quarter shots to take a 20-2 lead after one.
The Tigerettes missed their first 12 shots of the second frame but the visitors were unable to make a dent as the Lady Tigers couldn’t buy a basket. Rylee Mathis’ free throws got the scoring going again with almost five minutes gone in the second.
Mathis would add a bucket but Holman’s pair of buckets and a three from downtown would help Jacksboro take a 31-5 lead into intermission.
Wood said he is seeing improvement with the way his posts rebound and get the ball into transition, which was evident Friday evening. After a horrid shooting 1-8 first half for Electra, the visitors scored two baskets in each of the final two quarters.
The Tigerettes opened the second half with an 8-0 string over the first 2:20. Holman, Berend and Mathis combined for all eight of the tallies. Brynn Pardue and Teagan Reynolds each added to the offensive onslaught as the Tigerettes went up 45-11 after three frames.
Pardue, an outside shooting specialist, converted from outside the arc to open the fourth frame. Mathis had six points to lead a 23-point purge in the final eight minutes.
Holman tossed in a season-high 21 points to lead Jacksboro with Mathis and Berend adding 14 each.
Jacksboro traveled toTolar Saturday.
