PERRIN – Perrin Girls Basketball Coach Eddie Fortenberry was very forthcoming about his squad following their 45- 22 season opening loss to Chico Dec. 1.

“Typical,” Fortenberry said. “What I mean that is its our first game with no practice. With COVID and some of the kids not having touched a basketball in a year. It’s gonna take some time to get rolling.”

Many newcomers are trying to acclimate themselves into the second-year coach’s lineup. Perrin missed every first quarter from the field it took but free throws from Kamryn Staggs and Aaliyah Brown put the Lady Pirates up 4-0.Chico would close the frame on a 14-0 run.

Brown did a good job defensively but the Lady Dragons buried 6-7 first quarter shots to take a 14-4 lead after one.

Brown finally converted a Perrin shot, a banker with 15 seconds gone in the second. It would be the only hostess conversion on the half, Perrin missing its last five shots of the quarter.

Staggs had a pair of free throws to close the quarter the way she. Perrin hit but made 75-percent from free throw line and six percent from the field but found itself down 26-8 at the half.

Both teams went into the cooler shooting in the second half, a Staggs free throw with 3:31 left in the third the first point. Karson Bland caught a hot hand with a basket and three-pointer midway through the frame.

Perrin was 3-8 shooting in the frame but Chico was 1-7 to keep the lead in double figures at 28-16 too start the fourth quarter. The Lady Dragons opened on an 8-0 string to put the lead at 36-16 less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Erika Hernandez buried a three-pointer to snap the string but Chico was on its way to its fourth win in five tries, converting 50 percent of its fourth quarter attempts (7-14) as Perrin was just 1-5 shooting late.

Staggs tossed in eight points to lead Perrin. Kaylie Simmons had 19 points and Dani Gilmore 15 for the visitors.
