BRYSON – Much like the girls game that preceded it, Saint Jo and Bryson boys had a slow first three quarters offensively in combining for 38 points. The fourth quarter nearly equalled the first three quarters as the visiting Panthers broke things open for good and posted a 40-30 win.
Bryson slipped to 1-2 for the season. Coach Slade Egan was pleased with some of the things his Cowboys did.
“Defensively, we really got after it, but we gotta be able to shoot the ball and that’s something we were unable to do,” Egan offered. “We needed to do a better job moving the ball to the rim.”
A four-point first quarter from senior Zander Tinney with some help from Ethan Smith and Landon Stephens gave the hosts an 8-5 lead after one. The Cowboys defense held the Panthers to just 2-12 shooting in the first stanza.
A pair of three-pointers by Saint Jo’s Mike Eddlestein helped the Panthers come from behind early in the second, overtaking a cold shooting Cowboys club. Tinney’s bucket in the final minute of the half and a Smith free throw early on would be the only offense of the second quarter, which had Saint Jo go up 17-11 at the half.
Bryson’s cold shooting went into the iceberg range in the third quarter, the Cowboys missing all 13 of their shots from the field. Pairs of free throws by Grayson Allen and Stephens kept things close as Saint Jo was unable to extend on its lead which stayed at five, 22-16.
Saint Jo managed to keep its lead in single digits Allen and Tinney each had pairs of baskets for the hosts to draw within six twice late but it wouldn’t be enough for Bryson, which shot 22 percent from the floor (11-51).
Tinney had 12 points and Smith seven for Bryson.
