  • Thankful for the little things this holiday season

I’ve never thought of being told a road trip to Archer City would make this heart go pitter patter, but it did last week.

In this time of COVID, the possibility of schools shutting down and making my life miserable wouldn’t be a good thing. With games and meetings being cancelled due to pandemic over the last week, and a looming early deadline for Thanksgiving, I was beginning to wonder what you folks were going to read in today’s paper.

I then get a Facebook post that the Tigerettes were heading into Archer County for a game Nov. 17 in Archer City. That, coupled with some All-District stuff, this column and Luke Clayton’s outdoor fun, will give me some things.

Thanks coaches for letting me know. I found out from our radio guys. I rely on my schools for any number of things, (most notably, the friendship of school personnel) but also the games for the stuff you folks count on us to bring you week in and week out. We all remember last Spring when I just about lost my mind going several months with no games.

All of us got through graduation and may be starting new traditions with outdoor graduations at the stadiums (possibility?). They were able to get more people in at seemed but then again if it’s a lost night weather wise (which it did become) we may be in a world of hurt.

Anyway, it never hurts to have a Plan B.

I think if it’s one thing we’ve learned since Spring, is always have a backup plan. While COVID and rain are two different things, it never hurts to be prepared.

While COVID is threatening to cancel some major things in the coming weeks, it can’t cancel what we feel this holiday season. The love for our family, friends. You don’t want to spend money traveling for Thanksgiving in fear of getting sick? Have a virtual Thanksgiving on Zoom.

It may sound strange but it’s what the Smiths are doing. We’re doing Thanksgiving at home instead of traveling to Houston to see the in-laws. I haven’t had Thanksgiving with my family in decades.

They’re still in my heart where they always will be.

As we’ve proven through most of this year, we can get through anything as long as we do it together. Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

That’s about it for this week. As always, thanks for reading.

See y’all down the road.
