ARCHER CITY – There’s cold … and then there’s Jacksboro’s girls’ shooting in the fourth quarter here Nov. 16.
The Tigerettes, down 36-32 heading into the final eight minutes of the Lady ‘Cats season opener, missed 21 of their 22 shots in the fourth, sans a three-pointer by freshman Avery Bennett with 4:57 to go. The offensive drought made the Lady ‘Cats’ 55-35 win much more a rout than it really was.
Jacksboro, which lost its second straight contest, falls to 2-2.
It wasn’t the first run the Lady ‘Cats had in the second half, Archer City used a 6-0 run over the first 1:50 of the third quarter to take a 27-25 lead. It was Brynn Pardue’s third three of the game which snapped the run with just under three minutes gone in the third.
Fortunately, the two teams had equally bad shooting in the third (Jacksboro 3-12, Archer City 3-14) but a pair of Olivia Vogtsberger baskets, including a buzzer beater, put Archer up 36-32 to start the fourth.
Archer got out to a 8-0 lead to start the game before baskets by Traci Berend and Jaci Gann tied the game at eight. Gann’s free throws would cap a six-point quarter for her and end the frame tied at 10.
The Tigerettes played fierce, aggressive defense which forced several turnovers in the first half. In the previous three games, the Purple was able to turn that into points. Those didn’t come quite as easily in this game.
Jacksboro was able to take advantage of not being whistled for its first foul until the opening seconds of the second frame after which Archer had already been whistled for six fouls. Jacksboro opened the second with a 10-0 string of its own, Pardue and Rylee Mathis each had threes after inside buckets from Alex Holman and Tullous to give the Tigerettes a 20-10 lead with 3:52 left in the half.
Over the next 2:40 and change, however, Archer went on an 11-0 string to retake a one-point lead. Pardue’s second three-pointer of the frame ended the run with under a minute to go in the half and a pair of free throws to put Jacksboro up 25-21 at the break.
Pardue had 11 points and Gann six to lead the Tigerettes. Aspyn Huzeman paced three in double figures for the Lady ‘Cats with 12 tallies.
After games in Haskell, Paradise and Iowa Park before Thanksgiving, (no results available as of press time), the Tigerettes return home to play Archer City Dec. 1 at 6:15 p.m.
