Lady Pirates drop season opener games to Saint Jo, Graford

It wasn’t the start to the season the Lady Pirates were looking for. The team had their home opener to start off the regular season last week and came out with an 0-2 record dropping both of their matches to the Saint Jo Lady Panthers and the Graford Lady Rabbits.

The games took place Monday, Aug. 11, and while the Lady Pirates fought hard in both games, the opposition pulled away. The main culprit that Lady Pirates head coach Rebekah Bland pointed to in the losses was a depletion of stamina as the sets went on.

Jaydah McComack goes up for a kill Saturday, Aug. 16. McComack has risen as a leader for the team going into the season.

Bryson represents at Marlboro Man Memorial Volleyball Tournament

The Bryson Cowgirls showed out in a big way by participating in the Marlboro Man Memorial Volleyball tournament at the start of this volleyball season.

The Cowgirls kicked off their regular season schedule last Tuesday, Aug. 12 against Bluff Dale where they picked up a match win in three sets to start the year.

They won 25-11, 25-12 and 25-20 respectively. Being that the Cowgirls this year are a younger team, this was an impressive start for coach Mandy Cernosek.

“Tonight, I was blown away by this young team’s energy on the court and the want to win,” Cernosek said.

Perrin-Whitt kicks off fall sports with Meet the Pirates night

Perrin-Whitt fall sports are kicking back into full swing and the school ushered in the new season with their annual Meet the Pirates event.

The event took place this past Thursday, Aug. 7, where parents and fans gathered in the Perrin-Whitt High School gym.

This is an event that organizer Ashley Murray said she is happy to run for the students every year.

“We enjoy doing this for our students, introducing them to the community,” Murray said. “They really love it too.”

This was a sentiment that couldn't be more reflected from head football coach Kevin Lloyd.

Tigerettes get first taste of action with preseason scrimmages

The Jacksboro Tigerettes varsity volleyball team powered through their final stop of the offseason before regular season matches begin. The team traveled to Graham for a slate of scrimmage matches just days before their opening match.

The Tigerettes traveled Friday, Aug. 8, over to Graham High School for a slate of matches against Memorial, Nocona and of course, Graham. However, these were less official matches and more like the type of competitions that would be seen in summer league volleyball.

It’s the time of year once again where summer offseason programs come to a close and high school teams all across Texas prepare for regular season play. For the Jacksboro Tigerettes, that time came this past week with official practices.

However, even though the team's official practices started Friday, Aug. 1, the team actually got ahead of the game by holding an unofficial camp earlier in the week.

The Tigerettes participated in one final joint summer camp on Monday and Tuesday, July 28-29, with the Windthorst Trojanettes.

Area football teams prepare for season with two-a-day practices

Fall sports are right around the corner and that means teams will be transitioning out of summer offseason activities and back into official practices.

That’s exactly what the Jacksboro Tigers, Bryson Cowboys and Perrin-Whitt Pirates kicked off with two-a-days.

All three schools kicked off their two-a-day practices Monday, Aug. 4, and will continue to practice on the two a day schedule until the start of the school year.

For each of these teams that means each day will bring a variety of routines for athletes, but mostly consisting of the same elements.
