It’s the time of year once again where summer offseason programs come to a close and high school teams all across Texas prepare for regular season play. For the Jacksboro Tigerettes, that time came this past week with official practices.
However, even though the team's official practices started Friday, Aug. 1, the team actually got ahead of the game by holding an unofficial camp earlier in the week.
The Tigerettes participated in one final joint summer camp on Monday and Tuesday, July 28-29, with the Windthorst Trojanettes.
On top of this, the teams were coached by Abilene Christian University coaches Ijeoma Moronu Alstrup and Chris Alstrup.
This is because prior to the August start date, Sams and any other head coach for high school volleyball teams in the state can not legally coach their team.
Therefore, having the ability to have college coaches like the Alstrup’s instruct the team had several advantages as a substitute according to Sams.
“It’s awesome, they do such a good job,” Sams said. “It helps skill wise, it helps knowledge wise, it’s good for the girls to be seen by college coaches. It’s another chance to put them out in the community.”
Sams also said it was good for the girls to get in-game simulated action against another team while also not feeling the threat of giving away too much of their game being that Windthorst is in a separate district and division.
The team’s official practices kicked off over the weekend where Sams said that the girls have a very precisely timed out routine.
Two a day practices for the Tigerettes run in sessions for around five hours where the girls participate in a variety of activities to prepare them for the marathon of the regular season.
They had their traditional practices where they work on skills and positional situations to solidify the roster going into the year.
On top of this, they worked to improve their physical fitness and abilities by taking time to work in the weight room and focus on conditioning and they also took time for “team time” and breakfast to build camaraderie and familiarity with each other.
With practices officially under way, the team is only weeks away from their first scrimmage matches and official games to kick off the year.
