The Jacksboro Lady Tigers participated in the final week of the Windthorst summer league this past week. While head coach Bekah Sams said there are things to improve upon, overall the team showed growth during their slate of games.
The final week of the Windthorst summer league kicked off Tuesday, July 22, and the Lady Tigers had a solid night going 3-0 against Henrietta, Windthorst and City View.
Overall, Sams said that the team’s ceiling this season is entirely based on how far the team pushes themselves.
“There’s a lot of possibilities,” Sams said. “I think we have more depth than we’ve had since I’ve been here, which is good. We have the ability to be pretty good, we just have to see how things pan out, and how hard they’re willing to work for it.”
The Lady Tigers definitely showed fight in their first match of the night against Henrietta. The team struggled early and were losing 23-18 to Henrietta in the final ten minutes.
However, both lines utilized the center of the net to their advantage to bring things to within striking distance 30-29.
A perfectly set ball lead to a kill on the right side of the net for the Jacksboro offense and a good call out from the team lead to a ball going out of bounds, giving the Lady Tigers their first lead of the game 31-30 with three minutes left.
Both teams traded points back and forth in the final minutes but Jacksboro hung on 3534 for the win.
Their second match against Windthorst Blue was essentially the flipside of their first game, close the whole time, but it was the Lady Tigers in the drivers seat.
The team started with the lead 6-4 after an ace.
This became a theme of the game as the Lady Tigers picked up three more aces in the final five minutes in order to take a commanding 36-23 lead.
The team eventually went on to win 42-25 in dominant fashion.
The team got into another close contest in their final match of the night against City View. The teams flipped leads three times in the later portions of the game, but Jacksboro was able to pull away with miscues from City View and being aggressive offensively on the front line.
The team went on to pick up another close victory 33-28.
When it comes to improvements, Sams says the number one thing the team needs to work on is passing.
“ Probably every coach’s answer is consistent passing,” Sams said. “Doesn’t matter how good your hitters are if your hitters never get a good set.”
Theteamgotachance to work on that area of their game with team camp starting Monday, July 28.
