Tuesday afternoon, a group gathered at the King family cemetery to honor Sheriff William Meredith King who was killed in the line of duty July 17, 1885.
Several Jack County officers and some of King’s descendants, Jim Whitsitt and Virginia Shanafelt with her husband Sam, visited his grave today where a wreath was placed and Taps was played.
To kick-off National Police Week, Mayor Alton Morris signed a proclamation declaring May 13-19 as Police Week in the City of Jacksboro at Monday night’s city council meeting.

With all of today’s votes tallied, the unofficial results of the Bryson ISD School Board election show write-in candidate for the Place 2 seat Danny Lewis winning over opponent Hayden Behling by one vote.
Lewis received 23 votes to Behling’s 22.
But there are still 10 paper ballots out that could be counted.
Jack County Clerk Vanessa James said absentee ballots postmarked by May 5 and received by Monday at 5 p.m. are counted.
Lewis was the clear favorite among absentee voters garnering votes from 11 of the 12 returned as of Election Day.

6:43 a.m. — Two vehicle accident on FM 1191 N.
8:20 a.m. — Oil was reported in the creek on FM 1191 S.
8:55 a.m. — Medical emergency in the 14800 block of Hwy. 199.
12:32 p.m. — A caller reported adult neglect on Hackley St. in Perrin.
12:41 p.m. — A caller reported seeing a man hanging from a wind turbine in the Keechi Wind Farm. All men were accounted for and it was likely a tool bag being pulled up.
1:23 p.m. — A strange man was reported in the caller’s yard in the 1000 block of Wesley Chapel.
Information Technology Director Frank Hefner told county commissioners Monday he is working on upgrading the interface and console for the Sheriff Department’s dispatch center to accommodate digital channels at a cost of about $2,500. The present analog channels are causing the department to lose signals.
In a brief meeting Tuesday evening, Jack County Hospital District Board members agreed to a change in the bylaws to move their monthly meeting date.
Because of board members having increasing trouble making Tuesday night board meetings, the board opted to move their meeting dates starting in June to the fourth Monday of every month at 6 p.m. Because the fourth Monday in May is Memorial Day, the board also voted to cancel its May meeting.
The Jacksboro City Council proclaimed May 2018 Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month. Members of three clubs, Guardians of the Children, AZUSA Streetriders and the Watchmen were on hand at the Monday city council meeting for the proclamation.
The City of Jacksboro is selling some properties it abated and others that did not meet the minimum bid at the sheriff’s tax sale. The lots discussed at the council’s regular meeting Monday were 317 N. 4th St., 535 W. Archer St. and 332 N. 9th St.
The city received unsolicited offers to buy the properties prior to the meeting.
City Manager Mike Smith said the property at 317 N. 4th was voluntarily abated after a fire destroyed the home there a few years ago.
BRYSON – While three spots on the Bryson ISD board are up for reelection, only one is a contested race.
Places 6 and 7 only had the incumbents Cliff Smith and Travis Thorne file. Place 2 had one candidate file in newcomer Hayden Behling with Danny Lewis, who is presently serving in the spot, as a write-in candidate. Lewis said he had every intention of filing for the position but work kept him from doing so.
“I was out of town on the last day (to file),” Lewis said. “I had planned on being in town and thought I would just file on the last day, but couldn’t do it.”
Ronald Starkey, 40, was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 Thursday afternoon and was sentenced to 50 years in prison and assessed a fine of $10,000 by a 12-member Jack County jury.
Following closing arguments Thursday morning, the jury came back in less than two hours finding the former Perrin Baptist youth minister guilty of sexually assaulting his then 3-year-old adoptive daughter in May 2004.
