BOWIE – Bryson opened District 12-A play Oct. 13 with a convincing 70-0 win over Gold-Burg, winning its third straight game to go to 5-2 overall.

Bryson scored 34 first-quarter points and added 36 in the second. The Cowboys put up just over 300 yards in the half before the game was called because of the mercy rule.

Quarterback Braden Houser was 7-9 for 90 yards passing and four TDs. Ethan Robinson had two catches for 32 yards, both touchdowns. Tristan Stephens had three grabs for 41 yards, one for a touchdown. Paul Davidson had two grabs for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Jacksboro’s boys cross country team qualified for the Region I-3A Meet Oct. 23 by virtue of a third-place finish at the District 8-3A Meet Oct. 12 in Boyd.

Javier Palomar led the Tigers with a 7th-place finish, Hoyt Nebgen was 16th with Jose Palomar right behind in 17th. Freshman Drew Bright was 20th, Daylon Valles was 25th with Randall Hamilton right behind in 26th and Zach Sharp in 39th.

HENRIETTA – The silence was deafening.

Using a quick Tiger start and the ability to quickly counter any comeback the host Bearcats had, Jacksboro made a statement and threw its hat into the District 5-3A Division II race with a convincing 37-22 win at Bearcat Stadium Friday night that obviously stunned many of the host faithful.

Jacksboro Coach Brannon Rodgers said his squad’s ability to counter comebacks was perhaps too good.

In life, the king of the hill doesn’t change until they are knocked off.

Henrietta has been at the top of the District 8-3A heap for a couple of years now. The charge to knock them off begins this evening when Jacksboro heads to Bearcat Stadium for the loop opener for both teams. Both squads have had good non-district slates, the Tigers going 5-0 with Henrietta going 4-1, losing only to Childress.

Jacksboro Coach Brannon Rodgers says the Bearcats have put together another good squad in 2017.

Jacksboro Middle School’s football teams continued its seasons recently.

The seventh grade faced Muenster and ended in a 6-all tie. Paul Shackelford’s 40-yard TD run in the third quarter tied the game and the Tiger defense made it stick.

Micky Martinez had a fumble recovery for the squad.

“This was our first complete ball game of the year,” Coach Brian Davenport said. “The kids did a good job getting on and off the field with few errors. There was plenty to be excited about and build on for the season.

GORMAN – After a 2-2 start, much of it vs. state-ranked teams, Bryson has turned the corner in recent weeks and won its second straight game Oct. 6 with a 60-26 win over the hosts.

Bryson is now 4-2 for the season and was able to avenge a tough loss to Gorman from a year ago. The Cowboys put up 440 yards of offense in the contest.

Bryson led 16-6 after one with each team scoring a touchdown and conversion in the second for a 24-14 Cowboy lead at the half. Bryson scored 20 third quarter and 16 fourth quarter points while holding Gorman to a single score in each frame.

Freshmen have been mocked as the low man on the high school totem pole for centuries. Tuesday night, a pair of Jacksboro freshman volleyball players gave reason to rethink that philosophy.

WOODSON – Bryson finished the first half of its schedule Sept. 29 with a convincing 59-7 win here to go to 3-2 for the campaign.

The Cowboys outscored the hosts 37-7 in the first and added three scores with conversions in the second quarter to end the game at halftime on the 45-point mercy rule. Bryson had just 302 total yards.

Quarterback Braden Houser was 9-13 for 216 yards and five touchdowns. Paul Davidson was 1-1 for 3 yards in the air as well.

IOWA PARK – Jacksboro Middle School’s 8th-grade football team gave up a 22-point first quarter Sept. 21 which ultimately sent the squad to a 36-12 defeat.

The Tigers are 0-2. Coach Brian Davenport said the slow start hurt.

We got off to a very slow start. We allowed 22 points in the first quarter before we really started playing,” Davenport said. “We played pretty even after that. We played better on offense as the game progressed. Domanik Hammond ran the ball effectively. “

Locked in a battle for nearly two hours here Saturday afternoon, Jacksboro and Bowie’s varsity volleyballers left everything they had on the floor for their supporters.

Bowie had a 10-9 lead in the fifth set before Jacksboro broke serve and used pairs of points from Jordan Pruitt and Alex Holman, both freshmen, to finish the job in a thrilling 25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 16-25, 15-11 match at Tiger Gym.

Jacksboro is 3-4 and Bowie 2-5 to close out the first round of District 8-3A play. The rematch will be in the regular season finale Oct. 24.
