Lady Bobcats end Cowgirls season in three-game sweep

MIDLOTHIAN – A tough way to end a great season.

Bryson ran into a buzzsaw known as top-ranked Blum Friday, Nov. 12 in the Region II-A volleyball semifinals. The Lady ‘Cats, which knocked Bryson from the postseason a year ago, were able to do the job again.

Despite a valiant effort from he Cowgirls, Blum, the Region II-A winner from a year ago, was able to find its spots and put the ball where Bryson wasn’t in a 25-8, 25-11, 25-13 win.

Bryson bucks Bluff Dale out of Class postseason

PERRIN – Bryson’s volleyballers have their eyes set on a State title.

After winning the District 9-A title last month, the Cowgirls got a break before taking on Bluff Dale in area competition Thursday night. The respite cost Bryson next to nothing as the squad needed just 49 minutes to take care of the Lady ‘Cats 25-8, 25-6, 25-8.

Bryson moved on to the regional quarterfinal round to face Prairie Valley in Windthorst Tuesday night (results not available as of press time). Bryson Coach Kim Hauger said the win will benefit the team down the road.

Perrin volleyball falls to Electra in bi-district

OLNEY – For the second straight year, Perrin’s volleyballers gave an opponent many thought they wouldn’t compete with everything they wanted.

Unfortunately for the Lady Pirates, Electra had too much in the tank late and sent Perrin to a 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, 14-25 Class A bi-district loss here Tuesday night.

Electra, the second place team in District 9-A, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one and were never headed. Summer Burkett and Natasha Frissell came through with serving pairs with Makenna Mathis serving up three in a row but it wasn’t enough.

In the doghouse

Just another night at the stadium.

In a game that had more than 1,000 yards of offense and 223 yards in penalties, Millsap used a three touchdown in 2:49 spurt midway through the fourth quarter and held off a furious rally that ended with a touchback in the end zone in the final minute and change to post a 40-33 win over Jacksboro.

Clutch

After a heartbreaking loss to Dublin last week, the Jacksboro Tigers took the field Friday night against the district-leading Eastland Mavericks with something to prove.

The Tigers did just that in overcoming a two-touchdown deficit and keeping their composure while mounting a comeback which gave the Tigers a three-point lead in the final minute. With the pressure mounting and the Tiger defense needing a stop, the squad got what it needed and Jacksboro wound up with a thrilling 51-48 home field win over the Mavericks.

Late rally dooms Tigers

DUBLIN – Many times, life will turn on a dime, Friday’s Jacksboro versus Dublin game turned on a nickel.

A Lion interception with 5:55 left and the Tigers leading 20-14 would set the stage for a comeback in a game the visitors had dominated for the most part. A second interception not even 90 seconds later would ultimately seal the deal in a disappointing 21-20 loss for Jacksboro.

The Tigers are now 1-1 in District 5-3A Division II and 3-3 overall while the upstart Lions are 2-0 and 6-1.

Tigers dam Merkel

After a Jacksboro fumble turned into a Merkel score less than one minute into Friday night’s district opener, you couldn’t blame fans for asking themselves if this would be a repeat of the season opener.

The Tigers obviously learned from their mistakes and received a solid defensive performance in the second half. The offense picked up a pair of third quarter scores to take control while the defense held its own in the fourth quarter of a 20-14 win at Tiger Stadium.

Isaiah Burns returned the aforementioned turnover 25 yards for a score. The conversion was good.

Hungry like the Tiger(ette)

Jacksboro’s volleyball team lost all six of its first-round District 7-3A games as part of what has been a rough season. On Oct. 5, the Tigerettes had enough and opened the second round of play on a high note with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-20, 25-23 win.

In their first meeting, the Lady Bucks had beaten Jacksboro in four games. Jacksboro coach Kelli Barnett said several factors made a difference in the two matches.

Cowgirls sweep past Olney Lady Cubs

OLNEY – There are certain nights where coaches have a chance to experiment with lineups and to see what works best.

Such was the case Tuesday evening where visiting Bryson took some looks at their front row to see how it looked. It mattered little as the Cowgirls took a 25-8, 25-8, 25-7 win over the Lady Cubs.

Bryson coach Kim Hauger said looking at junior Allie Orr in the front row may pay dividends down the stretch and into the postseason.
