Bryson boys lose district pair

BRYSON – The Cowboys had an off week to open district play, losing home games to Graford and Throckmorton.

Bryson opened district Jan. 13 vs. Graford and suffered an 85-40 setback. The Cowboys held tough for a while, down just 19-16 after one. The Jackrabbits then began to pull away with a 22-6 second quarter for a 41-22 lead at the half.

The visitors nearly equalled their first half output, scoring 36 points while holding Bryson to 15. Bryson tossed in just three fourth quarter points with Graford adding eight.

JHS girls win, boys fall vs. Henrietta

Jacksboro managed a split with visiting Henrietta Thursday afternoon as District 8-3A action continued.

Both games were rescheduled from Tuesday due to the death of a JHS student.

On the girls side, an 11-0 run by the Tigerettes broke open what was a close game and gave Jacksboro a sweep of the Lady ‘Cats with a 51-36 win. Jacksboro is now 7-1 in district action and 22-5 overall with Henrietta falling to 2-6 and 10-14. 

Eighth 'A' girls win Graham Tourney

GRAHAM – Jacksboro Middle School’s 8th grade girls hoopsters won a four-team tournament here Saturday.

The girls beat district foe Paradise 44-13. Jordan Pruitt had 26 points, Alex Holman nine, Rhett Rollans four, Harlee Richardson and Makenna McAnear two each with Hadlee Richardson adding a free throw.

In the final vs. the host Lady Blues, Jacksboro posted a 28-24 victory.

JMS 7 boys face Nocona

Seventh grade boys basketballers managed a split of games with Nocona Jan. 9.

The ‘B’ team picked up its first win of the season with a 19-10 victory over the Indians. Trent Irwin and Andrew Botello each had six points with Colt Kaker adding four. Defensively, Caleb Howard had eight rebounds with Botello hauling down another five. Coach Heath Tullous lauded Edwin Avalos and Eddye Roach for the defensive job they did.

Boys fall on road

PARADISE — It’s not often it “rains” here but it poured inside Panther Gym Jan.13.

Three pointers that is.

A Panther team that has had problems finding outside prowess this season had no such issues against Jacksboro’s boys basketball team, burying 10 three pointers which overcame other issues and enabled the hosts to post a 61-53 win over the Tigers.

Jacksboro slips to 1-4 in District 8-3A and 10-14 overall with the Panthers going to 2-3 and 9-12. Tiger Coach Eric Symank said the fourth quarter, which his squad led in,  hurt his team.

Girls roll through Paradise

PARADISE – Jacksboro’s girls opened district last year here, getting out to a 13-point second half lead ... only to see it slip away with the Tigerettes suffering an overtime loss.

On Jan. 13, a nearly identical situation happened with the visitors getting out to a second-half lead ... only to expand on it and have one of their best overall games of the season in a 56-31 victory. The Tigerettes close the first round of District 8-3A play at 6-1 (21-5 overall) while the Lady Panthers drop to 5-2 and 14-10.

Lifters open season

BRIDGEPORT – Jacksboro's power lifters had a strong showing in their initial meet of the year Saturday.

Josh Wells finished 2nd at 165-pounds, lifting 1,100 pounds. K.C. Rater finished 7th at 275, lifting a combined 930 pounds. James Brock and Cody Howard were 8th and 13th, respectively, at 198 pounds with combined lifts of 980 and 835 pounds, respectively.
The team is off this week but hosts a meet Jan. 28.

Bryson boys lose to Era

BRYSON – The Cowboys took a 17-point lead at half vs. visiting Era Tuesday evening but the Hornets used a big third quarter to get in the game and took control in the fourth quarter of a 49-41 win over the hosts.

Bryson jumped out to a 9-4 lead after one and exploded for 18 second quarter points. Era continued to have problems offensively, scoring six points to fnd itself down 27-10 at the half.

JMS boys face Holliday, Nocona

JMS’ ‘A’ boys basketball squads were swept at home by visiting Holliday Jan. 5.

The 7 ‘A’ team remained winless for the campaign with a 48-15 setback. The Tigers fell behind 13-5 after one and were down 26-11 at the half. Holliday outscored jacksboro 13-0 for a 39-11 cushion heading into the fourth.

Josh Pierce had five points with Cody Frie, Tanner Burby and Gage Owen each scoring two points. Frie led the way rebounding with seven with Burby and Frie both noted for their defensive prowess by Coach Heath Tullous.
