Perrin has a chance to win their first district title since 1971 defeating Bryson 28-24 on Nov. 1.
The Pirates move to 8-1 on the season and are undefeated in district. Bryson falls to 4-5 and is winless in the district.
The Pirate’s eight wins equal with their most wins in a season when the Pirates went 8-3 and 4-1 in the district in 2008.
Perrin head coach Ben Staggs said he knew they were going to win today. He said his team gained momentum after scoring on a touchdown pass to Rafael Alvarado from Landon Draper to put them up 8-0 less than two minutes into the game.
“That kind of calmed us down a little bit,” Staggs said “We were amped up because this was one of our biggest games in a while but I think it helped calm the nerves a little bit.”
The Cowboys answered back with a 19-yard touchdown run from TJ Imotichey with just six seconds to play in the first quarter to cut the Pirate lead to 8-6. The Pirates expected to start the second quarter with the ball but Sammy Hernandez picked up the kickoff and ran to the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown that gave the Pirates a 14-6 lead at the end of one quarter.
Bryson turned the ball over on downs to start the second quarter but Perrin could not capitalize as Hernandez threw a ball that was intercepted by Marcos Espinosa. The Cowboys would have similar luck with a fumble by Imotichey that set up the Pirates on the Cowboy’s 24-yard line. Three plays later Hernandez would run it in from one yard out to make it a 22-12 game, where the score would stand until halftime.
