Six make MSU honor roll

Six students from Jack County were recognized for academic excellence at Midwestern State University.

MSU recognized 1,046 honor students for the Spring 2016 semester. The President’s Honor Roll included 353 students, the Provost’s Honor Roll included 302 students and the Dean’s Honor Roll included 391 students.

From Jacksboro, Abbie Kinder made the Provost’s Honor Roll, Meagan King, the Dean’s List and Kelsey Laake and Matthew Matlock made the President’s Honor Roll.

From Perrin, both Haylee and Kaycee Fowler made the Dean’s List.

Jacksboro Exes award scholarships

At the 2016 Jacksboro High School graduation ceremonies, the Jacksboro High School Ex-Student’s Association presented $88,000 in college scholarships to 10 JHS graduates.

Scholarship committee chairman Jerry Craft told the crowd that in the May 1990 ceremonies he presented two $1,000 scholarships.

“Since that time, including tonight, we have provided $879,000 in college scholarships,” Craft said. “This, of course, is due to the generosity of our ex-students, and our two wonderful foundations, the Miles Foundation of Fort Worth and theSwan Family Foundation of Jacksboro.”

Jacksboro student named Ford Leadership Scholar

The Texas FFA Association selected 10 agriculture students to participate in the Ford Leadership Scholars program and receive a $1,000 scholarship upon completion of the program. The participants are juniors in high school and chosen based upon six characteristics of leadership – action,relationships, vision, character, awareness and continuous improvement.

Kids on the land offers day of discovery for students

As the school year at Jacksboro Elementary School comes to a close, the eagerly awaited event for third, fourth and fifth graders is their annual trip to the Richards Ranch for the award-winning Kids on the Land (KOL) Program. For the sixth year in a row, the Hackley families hosted this three-day adventure which brings together the school system, the land owners, the community volunteers, KOL leaders, and professionals to teach elementary students about the place where they live and the importance of conserving resources for a sustainable future.

Museum's Pioneer Day coming up June 4

The Jack County Museum’s 13th annual Pioneer Day: A Living History Day will be held  Saturday, June 4 on the grounds of the museum at 241 W. Belknap. 

The fun begins at 10 a.m. and goes until 3 p.m. Participants will be on hand demonstrating activities from our ancestors’ way of life: cow milking, butter churning, quilting, candle making, bee keeping and lots of other activities. 

Jack County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo coming up next week

A Jack County tradition is “slowly on its way” to coming together for another year.

The 61st Annual Jack County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo is scheduled June 2-4 at the Arena west of Jacksboro on U.S. Highway 380. Junior Mower with the Sheriff’s Posse said things are beginning to come together and he expects another great rodeo.

“It’s beginning to come together,” Mower said in a Tuesday interview. “We are expecting around 2-300 participants when it’s all said and done.

Student wins calf scramble scholarship

A $2,500 scholarship was recently awarded to Landon Lewis of Jacksboro FFA by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s Calf Scramble Scholarship Committee. Lewis’ parents are Greg and Jenilynn Lewis. 

Participation in the 2016 Fort Worth Stock Show Calf Scramble program made Lewis eligible for the scholarship program. Fifty-four youth shared in $226,000 in Calf Scramble scholarship dollars. 

Big Brothers Big Sisters hosts successful golf tourney

Jack County Big Brothers Big Sisters hosted its fundraiser golf tournament Saturday, May 14. 

Executive Director Christine Castle said it was a great event which raised well over the $10,000 budgeted.

Fourteen teams competed in the tournament with the team of Kane Elenburg, Kagen Elenburg, Jesse Speirs and Carl Smith placing first.

The second place team consisted of Jack Pardue, Jose Valles, Tim Cavazos and Phillip Avila.

Players came from as far away as the Metroplex to participate.
