Jacksboro girl qualifies for National Finals Rodeo

Mika Shackelford always promised her mother she was going to take her to Las Vegas someday. That day will arrive shortly.

Shackelford, an incoming freshman at Jacksboro High, has qualified for something many rodeo competitors dream of but never realize: the junior National Finals Rodeo December 8-10. She has been a barrel racer since the age of seven and says her mother Georgia Cryer, a former barrel racer herself, got her involved.

Library kicks off Summer Reading Program

The Gladys Johnson Ritchie Library kicked off its Summer Reading Program June 7 with sign-ups. Children ages 4 to 12 will read for prizes with a program each Tuesday at 10 a.m. The library is also hosting a summer reading program for teens and adults going on now through August 5. For every book checked out and read from the Gladys Ritchie Library, including its eBooks, patrons will receive a ticket to be entered into a drawing for a gift card.  

Perrin resident graduates from Oklahoma Baptist University

Perrin’s Kayan Dunnigan received a bachelor’s degree during Oklahoma Baptist University’s 102nd Spring Commencement Friday, May 13, at 3 p.m. in Raley Chapel’s Potter Auditorium on the OBU campus in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Dunnigan earned a degree in biochemistry and graduated magna cum laude for maintaining at least a 3.70 grade point average.

Shane Hall, OBU alumnus and pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Del City, Oklahoma, delivered the address. He challenged the graduates to be prepared for life to interrupt their plans.

Lions install new officers

The Jacksboro Lions Club installed its officers for 2016-2017 at its meeting Wednesday.

Officers for the upcoming year are President Joe Mitchell, 1st Vice President Christine Castle, 2nd Vice President Mike Smith, Secretary Donna Cassle, Treasurer Tim Cassle, Membership Chair Melanie Belcher and Lion Tamer Mike Mitchell.

Burnett Hunt will serve as the club’s greeter and Will Aston and Mitchell Davenport will serve again as tail twisters.

Clint Myrick is the Leo Club sponsor.

Pioneer Day entertains with old fashioned fun

Robert Langford got into the swing of things for Pioneer Days Saturday.

Langford was dressed up like Teddy Roosevelt, glasses and all during the annual event at the Jack County Museum. A good crowd came out to see and learn how Jack County residents lived in the olden days.

Langford insisted he was not going for the Roosevelt look but it happened to work out that way. His wife, Sheri, had a large crowd nearby teaching how to make yarn the old-fashioned way using a machine that you pedal similar to a bicycle.

Friends of the Jacksboro Animal Shelter to host pet adoption Saturday

The Friends of the Jacksboro Animal Shelter will host a pet adoption at Tractor Supply Company in Jacksboro at 125 Western Trail Saturday, June 11 to encourage pet adoptions and support families raising pets and livestock.

Local animal groups will set up at Tractor Supply as part of Purina Days, an in-store event June 8-19 that highlights pets and livestock and the tools needed to properly care for animals.
