Clock ticking on moving bills

The clock is ticking on getting bills out of the House and to the Texas Senate, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick warned last week in a story in the Austin American- Statesman. Patrick presides over the Senate and is worried many bills that have made it out of House committees but have not gone before the full chamber will not be considered before the session ends.

On Monday, 4/24/23, the County Auditor appropriately presented a walk-in agenda item as her responsibility requires to be voted on by the Commissioner’s Court (CC). It was for an invoice someone agreed to buy in the County’s name without pre-authorization to purchase a 2022 Jeep Gladiator with 4,000 miles on it for $45,000 for the Sheriff’s office. Yes, you read it right… a Jeep Gladiator… for the SO… reportedly for the Sheriff himself.

House approves $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises

h IghlIghts The Texas House last Thursday passed two education-related bills, one that allocates $4.5 billion for teacher pay raises and another to increase the annual per-student base funding from $6,160 to $6,300 – a 2.3% increase. The Austin American-Statesman reported the bill would create minimum salaries for teachers ranging from $35,000 to $63,000 depending on experience and level of education.

Question of the season: Why did I buy all these clothes?

About a week ago, I changed the winter clothes in my closet for the spring and summer clothes which have been in the back bedroom all winter. Because we live in Texas where summer clothes can be worn with a jacket in the winter and the winter clothes are light weight, I shouldn’t have to change out the clothing. But I don’t have room in my “active” closet for everything. So, choices must be made.
