Perrin-Whitt CISD called a special meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 where school board trustees are expected to decide whether to call for a bond election in November. The board has until the end of day Monday, Aug. 18 to call for an election.

The district’s facilities committee met over the summer to balance wants against needs to recommend a bond package to the board at the regular meeting Tuesday, July 29.

Former JISD teacher named to Ag hall of fame

Former Jacksboro High School agricultural science teacher Wendy Meadows was inducted into the Agricultural Teachers Association of Texas Hall of Fame July 25 in Corpus Christi, recognizing Meadows for her exceptional contributions to agricultural education and student leadership across the state.

Meadows served as an agricultural science teacher for more than 30 years, including 22 years at Iowa Park High School from 1991 to 2013, and two years at JISD from 2018 to 2020.

One-way streets, no parking designated near middle school

Streets near Jacksboro Middle School will see a traffic pattern change after the city council voted to change the direction of traffic to one way on 4th and 6th streets and enforce no parking on those streets between Belknap and Live Oak. The council made the decision Monday, July 28, and residents and first responders said they approved of the move.

City sits on bill for deputy services

Jack County Sheriff’s Office delivered a bill to the city of Jacksboro in June for dedicated police coverage in the city, but the city has yet to pay, asking for clarification on expenses.

Jacksboro received an invoice dated June 9 totaling $64,998 for around-the-clock police coverage between April 18 and June 9. Total labor costs were $54,432 with $8,946 in overtime. Fuel costs totaled $1,620. Administrative and vehicle maintenance costs were not included.

Facilities committee recommends bond package to PWCISD

Perrin-Whitt CISD school board trustees have until 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18 to decide whether to call for a bond election in November. The district’s facilities committee met over the summer to balance wants against needs to recommend a bond package to the board at the regular meeting Tuesday, July 29.

About 20 people made up the committee of parents, district staff and community members evaluated the needs assessment and reviewed recommendations to set priorities.

City to address street drainage problems at town hall

The City of Jacksboro will hold a town hall meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12 at City Hall, giving the public a chance to speak directly with city council, staff and engineers about water drainage concerns along McCombs and South Church Street. While members of the city council were expected to be in attendance, no decisions would be made during the meeting.

With water drainage becoming an issue along McCombs Street and south Church Street, the city attempted to mitigate flooding by removing sections of curbing and channeling the water over a rock bed.

Perrin-Whitt students required to store personal communication devices at school

Perrin-Whitt CISD laid out the district's new policy for student personal communication devices, prohibiting their use on campus during the school day.

JISD releases cellphone policy ahead of new school year

Jacksboro ISD is expected to approve a new cellphone policy at its board meeting in August prohibiting the possession and use of cellphones, smart watches, tablets and other personal communication devices on campus during school hours.

Renovations approved at JISD baseball, softball fields

As Jacksboro ISD’s 2023 bond projects near completion, the district approved a plan Monday, July 21 to use contingency funds to install new bleachers and press boxes at the baseball and softball fields.

JISD Superintendent Brad Burnett said neither field had adequate spectator bleacher seating and the current press boxes were too small. The single paned window on the front of the press boxes also restricted the view down the first and third baselines.
