Bryson students required to attend class or sit out

Bryson ISD school board members approved the student attendance policy Monday, Aug. 4, now requiring students to come to class to be eligible for extracurricular activities.

“We’re asking our kids to come to school,” Bryson Principal Gary Kirby said. “The state says they have to be here 90% of the time, and we’re making a stance on the 90%.”

Post Oak Baptist Church begins new construction

The Post Oak Baptist Church family is excited to announce the beginning of construction on a new fellowship hall. The building will contain a kitchen, dining area, two handicap accessible restrooms and classroom spaces.

The congregation hopes the facility will be used not only for their own church family, but for the entire Jacksboro community.

Post Oak Baptist Church, located at 18543 Post Oak Road, gathers together at 11 a.m. every Sunday.

Perrin-Whitt calls for bond election in November

After a failed bond election in May, Perrin-Whitt CISD school board members will ask voters to return to the polls in November to decide on a $28,220,000 school bond package for district renovations and new construction on campus.

Perrin-Whitt CISD called a special meeting Tuesday, Aug. 12 where school board trustees chose a different package than the one recommended by the district facilities committee in July.

Bilby joins JPD

Officer Alvin Bilby has joined the Jacksboro Police Department as lieutenant, bringing with him years of law enforcement training and experience. Bilby was pinned by his wife Tedra and sworn into service Monday, Aug. 11 at City Hall.

Bilby was born and raised in Jacksboro, graduating from JHS in 1982. After attending Weatherford College, he joined the army in 1985 where he spent 20 years serving in Desert Storm, Kosovo and Iraq.

Bridge closed on Smith Road near Bryson

The bridge on Smith Road southeast of Bryson is closed to traffic following a declaration of emergency by Jack County officials Monday, Aug. 4. The bridge will remain closed to all traffic until it is replaced.

Commissioner Henry Birdwell, Jr. said one of the bridge’s I-beams is rusted through the center and bowing, while patches on the other side are showing signs of rust.

The county received a letter from TxDOT saying because the bridge could not safely hold the weight of vehicles, it should remain closed until it is replaced.

Save with back-to-school sales tax holiday weekend

State and local residents can get their children prepared with back-to-school savings through a state sales tax holiday next week.

The sales tax holiday will be held Friday, Aug. 8 through Sunday, Aug. 10 with sales tax exemptions on items priced below $100.

The Texas Comptroller’s office estimates shoppers will save an estimated $133.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the holiday next month.
