Mammograms key to early detection of breast cancer

Breast cancer continues to be the second-leading cause of death among Texas women each year, so screening for breast cancer can be a matter of life and death. Knowing where to go can make the process a little more comforting.

As the nation observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Faith Community Hospital is celebrating the fact that local breast-cancer screening is now available year-round in Jack County. 

Jack County GOP to host author

The Jack County Republican Party will host patriotic author and speaker Nick Adams at a special meeting Wednesday.

Adams is the founder and executive director of The Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness, an organization dedicated to promoting American exceptionalism and combating anti-Americanism worldwide.

He is also a best-selling author, columnist and commentator.

Born and raised in Australia, Adams is an immigrant to America, receiving a rare Extraordinary Ability Green Card.

Bryson mayor elected to Nortex seat

Bryson Mayor Sheila Birdwell has been elected as Secretary of Nortex Regional Planning Commission for the next year. The Nortex Regional Planning Commission Executive Committee elected Birdwell as the commission secretary at its regular monthly Board meeting in September. 

Other officer appointments for the upcoming year include Quanah Mayor Dale Eaton as chairman, Montague County Judge Rick Lewis as vice-chairman and Wichita County Judge Woodrow Gossom as past chairman.  

ESL class orientation coming up

Non-English speakers looking to learn the language will have the chance to with the start of English as a Second Language classes provided by Region 9 Education Service Center starting soon.

Those wishing to take the classes must attend one of two orientation meetings set for next week.

The meetings will be from 6-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26 and Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Gladys Johnson Ritchie Library, 626 W. College St. in Jacksboro.

Oates graduates from MSU

Midwestern State University recently announced the names of graduates.

Alyssa Shea Oates of Jacksboro, graduated from Midwestern State University in August 2016 with a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science degree. 

Midwestern State University had 205 undergraduate and graduate students who were awarded degrees in August 2016. 

Wizard Wells author to host book signing

Author Shelly Morrow Harris announces the nationwide release of her new book, “Reflections: A Journey to the True Me,” where she inspires her readers to explore their emotions and to reflect on their journey to their true selves.

In “Reflections: A Journey to the True Me,” Harris details her own path of life to become the person she is today. Through her collection of poetry and short stories, she allows her readers to look into her eyes and to feel her heart through her poetry.

Museum to benefit from Texoma Gives Day

One Jack County nonprofit organization will be a part of the inaugural Texoma Gives Day.

The Wichita Falls Area Community Foundation will host Texoma Gives Day from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15 to help area nonprofits raise funds.

The day is an online giving day for 146 registered nonprofits in 18 North Texas counties and six Southern Oklahoma counties.

The Jack County Museum is one of those nonprofits and donations can qualify for matching money or “prizes” throughout the day.

Pet Appreciation Adoption event set for Sept. 17

If you’re a proud pet owner or would like to be, mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 17 when the Tractor Supply Co. store in Jacksboro will be celebrating your furry friends for Pet Appreciation Week’s Main Event.

The main event on Saturday, Sept. 17 will include pet adoptions with community groups, samples, giveaways, drawings for gift cards, and other family friendly activities. In addition, deals on pet products, from food and treats to toys and crates, will be featured from Sept. 14-18.
