Fri, 09/29/2017 - 11:54 pm

Knotted in a tight battle midway through the second quarter Friday night, Jacksboro pulled away with 17 unanswered points in a closer than it looked 38-21 victory over visiting Bowie on Homecoming Night at Tiger Stadium.

Jacksboro remains perfect at 4-0 for the season while Bowie falls to 1-4. Jacksboro Coach Brannon Rodgers said keeping Bowie in checks defensively was huge.

“In the third quarter, we held them to five offensive snaps,” Rodgers said in going to 3-0 at home as the Tiger mentor “The kids continue to do the job and for the first time this year I thought we executed well.”

After forcing a turnover on downs on the first Bowie drive, Jacksboro marched 72 yards, scoring on a 7-yard Luke Dixon run around the left side. The Jackrabbits came right back with a 78-yard, 18-play drive of their own which ate up 7:45 of clock time, capped by an 8-yard scoring run by Matthew Wallace to cut the lead to 7-6 with 9:29 left in the half.

The Tigers then scored the last 10 points of the half with a Hunter Hackley run ending a 59-yard, 11-play drive for a 14-6 lead. After forcing a three-and-out on the ensuing drive and taking advantage of an 8-yard Bowie punt, Jacksboro marched to the Bowie 13 where Piedra tacked on a 30-yard field goal to go up 17-6 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, an offensive explosion of a fourth quarter opened with Jacksboro extending its lead to 24-6 on Payton Laake’s 1-yard dive which ended a 70-yard series with 11:56 to go. Bowie came right back with a 41-yard pass from Wallace to Rylan Dorman and added a two-point conversion to bring Bowie right back into the game at 24-14 with still 10:02 remaining.

The Tigers needed just three minutes to come back and extend the lead to 31-14 with 7:10 to go as Hunter Jackson bounced off defenders before hitting the right sideline and going 38 yards to the house. After again stopping Bowie on fourth down, the Tigers picked up their final touchdown on a short drive, Ethan Fudge doing the honors from 15 yards out.

Jacksboro put up 271 yards on the ground, led by Jackson’s 108 yards on 14 totes. Laake converted three passes for 39 yards, all to Dalton Harp.

The Tigers hit the road for Boyd next Friday.
