Tigers close Breck tourney on strong note

BRECKENRIDGE ­ – Jacksboro’s boys' basketball squad would up the Breckenridge Tournament on a high note Wednesday afternoon with a 68-38 win over the host Buckaroos.

Coach Eric Symank said in a text message that the squad elected to just play four games and not come back for Thursday games.

“(We) don’t want to kill ourselves before district games next week,” Symank said.

Jacksboro (9-11) got off on the right foot leading 12-6 after one with Clay Botello scoring eight of the points. The lead extended to 25-16 at the half with Botello and Dalton Harp each having four points in the quarter to pace the Tigers.

A 16-12 third quarter for the visitors followed with Tyler Rogers having seven and Riley Rollans four points for the Purple, which led 41-28 after three frames. The Tigers finished their tournament very strong, outscoring the ‘Roos 27-10 in the fourth. Payton Laake, who had two points in the first three frames combined, had an eight-point frame with Harper having six and Weston Bowen five.

Jacksboro, as it has all season, had balanced scoring with five players in double figures. Harp had six of his team-leading 13 in the fourth. Botello tossed in 12 with Laake, Rollans, and Rogers each contributing 10.

The Tigers returned to District 8-3A play Tuesday night vs. Bowie (see story, same section).

The girls closed pool play with a 57-17 win over Benbrook, a first-year Fort Worth school. No further details were available.

The girls (16-4) play a semifinal game in the tournament at 3 p.m. today vs. Brownwood. The squads have already met in the tournament with Jacksboro posting a 46-43 win. A win and theTigerettes play in the championship at 6 p.m. while a loss to the Lady Lions will end the squad's tournament.
