Boys fall in district opener

One of the tri-leaders in District 8-3A girls basketball fell by the wayside Tuesday evening.

Fortunately for Tigerette fans, it wasn’t Jacksboro.

The Tigerettes got out to a quick start vs. visiting Holliday and held on for an impressive 42-26 victory at Tiger Gym. The Tigerettes are now 3-0 in the loop and 13-4 overall.

Coach Todd Matlock said it was a good defensive effort but the problems with offensive lulls continue.

“We had six turnovers in our first seven possessions of the third quarter,” Matlock offered. “We need to shake that part of our game off.”

Jacksboro used nine Kaylea Maples points to get out to a 13-4 lead after one. The Purple was able to extend the advantage by outscoring the Lady Eagles 13-8 in the second for a 26-12 lead at intermission. Seven of the 13 points in the frame came from sophomore post Leah Plaster.

Holliday held Jacksboro to six points in the third but only put up nine to cut the lead to 32-21.

Jordan Nichols had all 10 of her points in the middle frames to lead a balanced attack, Tisdale added eight.

The Tigers opened district on a sour note falling 65-35 to the visitors. Jacksboro falls to 0-1 and 8-8 with the Eagles going to 1-0 and 10-4.

Seven points from Chase Borchardt broke Holliday out and staked the squad to a lead it would not relinquish. Holliday led 19-12 after one and doubled the lead in the second for a 35-21 halftime cushion. Jacksboro did use buckets from Clay Botello, Weston Bowen, and Riley Rollans to cut the deficit to seven after Holliday missed its first seven floor attempts of the third. The Eagles came back and went up 15, 45-30, heading into the fourth.

“They kind of put it on us in the fourth, but we played well in spurts,” Coach Eric Symank said. “At times we really did look like what we try to play like.”

Payton Laake had eight points to lead Jacksboro. Botello and Rollans had seven each.

Both squads are off until Tuesday when they begin play in the Breckenridge Tournament, which runs through Thursday.
