Reeves’ free throw lifts Bryson past Perrin

With less than three seconds to go and Bryson locked in a 43-all tie with Perrin Feb. 4, Tyce Reeves went to the free throw line already 0-3 at the charity stripe for the game, including having missed the front end of this two-shot foul.

Deciding he did not want overtime after watching Perrin come back from a 12-point deficit with just over five minutes left, Reeves buried the free throw to give the Cowboys the lead. With still an eternity remaining, Perrin Coach Jeffrey Browning called timeout to set up a play.

The inbound crosscourt pass, however, was stolen by Ragen Register who held on to the ball to seal the 44-43 win and keep the Cowboys in second place at 5-1 in District 21-A.

Bryson Coach Slade Egan had another explanation, going back to something the players do in practice.

“Once a week with have a pressure free throw situation just like what he had,” Egan offered. “If you miss the first, you run lines (ends of the court). If you hit the second, you don’t have to run. There’s nothing we simulate in practice that will prepare you for game time, though. It was all Tyce in that situation.”

Browning praised Keaton Burke, who had four 3-pointers in the comeback.

“We fed him the ball because he had the hot hand,” Browning commented. “My kids showed so much heart they had, but I give Coach Egan credit, as he’s built those kids into a solid team.”
