JMS 8 boys win Windthorst Tourney

WINDTHORST – Jacksboro’s 8th grade ‘A’ boys basketball squad took top honors in a tournament here Saturday.

The Tigers, now 8-4 overall, opened with a 37-19 win over Petrolia, Jacksboro used a press for some easy baskets early to jump out to a 13-4 lead. Each team scored six second quarter points for a 19-10 lead at the half. 

Jacksboro shutout Petrolia in the third while scoring eight third quarter points before outscoring the Pirastes 10-9 in the fourth. De’Treyvion Tate had 15 points with Landon Davenport adding 11, Jordan Yount added six points and Dylan Thomas five.

Tate, Drew Bright and Davenport were top rebounders.

“Our defense was very effective and we were able to get out in offensive transition to score some easy points,” Coach Brian Davenport said. “We were able to attack Petrolia’s zone in a variety of ways to garner good shots on offense.  We made the most of our opportunities.”

In the final vs. the host Trojans, the visitors jumped out to an early lead and beat the squad 55-42.

“(We) handed Windthorst their first loss in middle school football or basketball,” Davenport said.

The Tigers led 18-13 after one but Windthorst made a run in the second to cut the halftime deficit to 25-23. Jacksbro began to pull away in the third, outscoring the Trojans 13-10 and 17-9 in the fourth for the final margin.

Tate and Davenport each had 14 points and Yount 13 for Jacksboro. Bright added seven, Thomas four and Taber Dunn three. Tate, Bright and Davenport again were top rebounders. 

The squad’s press was not as effective as vs. Petrolia but the team’s half-court defense made up for it.

“This was our best game of the year and it resulted in our first basketball championship,” Davenport said. “We played well on Saturday and shot the best we had all season.  We hit our season high in points and made 7 three pointers.  Jordan Yount made four himself.  We opened and closed the game with our best play of the season.  I was very proud of our effort.”

The success continued with a 45-33 win over Bowie at home Monday evening.Bowie led 10-8 after one quarter but the Tigers outscored the Rabbits 13-10 in the second for a 21-20 halftime lead.

The visitors came back with an 11-8 third quarter for a 31-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter where the  hosts made their move defensively, allowing just two points in the frame to post the win.

Tate had 17 points and Davenport 13 to pace the Purple. Bright added five, Yount and Daylon Valles three each with Thomas and Edwin Salazar adding two points apiece.
