Jacksboro girls win district opener

Thu, 12/14/2017 - 11:59 am

Sometimes there is nothing you can do to avoid a rout, no matter how hard you try.

After Henrietta’s leading scorer Maddie Brown went down with a knee injury midway through the first quarter in Tuesday night’s District 8-3A opener with Jacksboro, the Lady ‘Cats appeared thoroughly shaken and stirred for the rest of the game. The Tigerettes shot 77 percent for the contest, mostly from layups, and posted a 78-13 win at JHS Gym.

Jacksboro (12-4, 1-0) Coach Todd Matlock said he did what he could, within reason, to keep the game from getting out of hand.

“I’m never, ever going to tell my players to stop playing defense,” Matlock offered. “We did what we’re going to do. Who did I have guarding their point guard? Leah Plaster. If they can’t get around my post player ...”

Brown had five points and four boards before leaving the game but the Tigerettes were already beginning to pull away as Baylee Thompson and Jordan Nichols had staked the hostesses to an 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
