Girls crush Boyd, boys lose in OT

BOYD –  A tough split was garnered by Jacksboro’s boys and girls basketball teams Friday here, the girls posting a 62-27 win over the Lady ‘Jackets while the boys suffered a 66-61 overtime setback. 

Summaries of both games follow.

Jacksboro girls 62, Boyd 27

The visitors never let Boyd in the game, leading by 10 after one quarter and coasting from there. 

Jacksboro is now 11-2 and 26-6 overall with the Lady ‘Jackets slipping to 3-10 in the loop.

Tough Tigerette defense, which held the Lady ‘Jackets to just four shots in the first frame, enabled the visitors to get out to alead it would never relinquished. Trinity Tisdale, Jaymee Yount, Baylee Thompson and a three-pointer from Kaylea Maples put the squad up six midquarter.

Maples would commence a 7-0 run with baskets by Leah Plaster and Brinkley Richardson putting the lead into double figures, 13-3, after one. Maples converted from outside more than two minutes into the second to extend the lead to 13.

An 8-0 Tigerette run pushed the lead to 24-5. Jacksboro continued to shut the door on Boyd’s senior post Lindsey Thorpe, who had seven first half points. She got little offensive support, enabling the Purple to take a 28-9 lead at the half.

The Purple opened the second half on a 12-0 run with Maples, Thompson, Tisdale, Plaster and Jordan Nichols helping to extend the lead to 40-9. Jacksboro held Boyd without a shot for the first five minutes of the third. Jacksboro had its best shooting frame, going 9-15 from the floor and taking a 47-16 lead after three.

Thompson had 16 points and Maples 14 for the Tigerettes. Thorpe had a game-high 18 for the Lady ‘Jackets.

Boyd boys 66, Jacksboro 61 (OT)

Boyd found its way into the District 8-3A win column with the victory, putting both squads at 1-10 in the loop.

Tied at 52 heading into the extra session, Boyd rolled out to a five-point lead, using seven points from Connor Richardson to take control late. A pair of Clay Botello buckets and a Tyler Rogers three-pointer got the squad within four in the final seconds but no closer.

Jacksboro Coach Eric Symank praised the work of Payton Laake, whose trey with four seconds left in regulation forced the extra session.

“We had three great screens on that play which enabled him to get open,” Symank said. “In overtime, we just couldn’t get the shots to fall.”

Boyd used Richardson three-pointers by Richardson to go up 10, 29-19 at the half. After a scoreless first half, Laake got rolling with a nine-point third to tie the game at 35. Botello broke the tie with a putback but a pair of free throws at the buzzer enabled Boyd to take a 40-39 lead heading into the fourth frame.

Laake had 16 points to pace the Tigers. Botello had 15 and Riley Rollans 11.The squads return home for Senior Night tomorrow evening. Girls tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys following at 7:30 p.m.
