Federal government overreach attacked on many fronts

The President, Congress, and the Texas Legislature all have been very active in implementing executive orders, legislation, resolutions, and letters to reduce the federal government’s massive regulatory overreach.

It all started with President Trump’s State of the Union address on Feb. 28, in which he said economic recovery must begin by reducing massive regulations on American businesses.

Grube boom town

One of Texas’ least-known ghost towns, Grube had a short, wild history capped by what some say was literally an explosive end.

A West Texas oil boom town, in the 1920’s it sprouted faster than a sage brush bloom after a good rain, no matter that it lay a hard, dusty drive from nowhere. Soon Grube became noted as a place where an off-duty oil patch worker could obtain bootleg booze and temporary feminine affection.

Leonard confronts modern coffee

I made a colossal mistake the other day. I tried to explain Starbucks to my neighbor, Leonard. Wanda June, his long-suffering wife, had tried and failed. I’m not sure either Wanda June, nor I, really understood how the whole process works. It’s complicated.

Because Leonard has a little problem with his knees, he spends a lot of time waiting while Wanda June shops. A week or so ago, he waited across from a Starbucks while Wanda June made the after-Christmas and Valentine sales. Wanda June is a serious shopper. Leonard is a serious watcher.

Wonders of the world?

With the rancor running rampant in the world today, it’s remarkable that the Seven Wonders of the World are staying stitched, at least so far.

This day, I cite three personal “wonderments,” none of which rises to the level of minutia. They have long been bewildering to me. Perhaps you’d prefer making your own list.

Your call….

Recorded messages: We’re all weary of the worn response about how much our calls are appreciated, but are disappointed that typically “associates are busy assisting other customers.”

Studies predict increase in activity

Several studies by economists, financial institutions, and the leaders in the oil and gas industry anticipate a much better business environment for the oil and gas industry in 2017.

The oil and gas industry in Texas ended a punishing 24-month-long economic contraction in December, according to Karr Ingham, a petroleum economist who issues the Texas Petro Index (TPI) monthly.    He said the TPI increased in December for the first time since peaking at a record high in November 2014.

King County shootout

For a gunfight to be burned into the hide of Old West lore, it is requisite that one or more participants end up in Boot Hill.

That explains why the wild shootout that interrupted the quietude of Guthrie one day in 1905 rates only nine paragraphs in a 465-page book on the history of King County.

It's flu season and this grandmother flew the coop

When one is brand new to the grandparenting world, everything is possible. Eleven years ago, I got up in the middle of the night and drove ninety miles to meet my daughter and take the six-week-old baby home with me because the baby sitter was unable to keep Baby Emma the first day my daughter went back to work after maternity leave.

Granddads and hurrahs

Most grandfathers--with little or no provocation--are happy to expound with inflated views of their grandchildren.

One boast of a long-ago granddad caused guffaws as it blew believability to shreds. Proud of quadruplet grandsons--vaunted players on a championship football team--he went overboard with praise.

“These boys are tough,” he’d begin. His friends could complete the unchanging litany. “Each one is so tough he can whip the other three.”…
