Small town, big stories

The Taylor County community of Potosi is not big enough to have a whole lot of stories connected to it, but it still has a couple of interesting tales.

The first involves one John Lytle. He has the distinction of being the first known resident of the area that would come to be called Potosi. He arrived in 1870.

Can't get something for nothing

Some things may still be free, but not many things. I realized that when I wandered into the Expo Room at the income tax school this past week. In one of my other jobs, I prepare income taxes during the “season.” Therefore, I found myself with almost two thousand other preparers visiting the big city, driving in traffic, and expecting to get loaded down with a treasure-trove of freebees and other useless junk.

Can I get an Amen please?

With so much surveillance going on in this country, it won’t be long before we’re able to spell the word, even if it is contrary to the old rule of “i” before “e” except after “c.”

Videos of protestors and other “assorted angsts” dominate the news these days, so one might reasonably ask if there is any good news.

Gulf production up, exploration down

Even though crude oil production in the Gulf of Mexico remains at a record pace, companies involved in exploration face tough times, according to an article in the June issue of Offshore magazine.

Crude oil production on federal leases in the Gulf set a record in April with 1.76 million barrels.

However, drilling activities have declined from 54 active rigs in May 2014 to 21 last week.

Investment in exploration activities will continue to decline by an anticipated 36 percent this year to $9.8 billion, the story stated.

World class gun collection in San Antonio

It’s not too hard to imagine the scene: A cattleman of some means walks into a San Antonio general merchandise store one day in the mid-1870s and asks to see one of those new fangled pistols he’s heard about. It holds six metal cartridges, a new technological development that makes it faster and easier to load than any other handgun on the market.

As Seen On TV

You can see just about anything on television these days. And … if you haven’t seen it on TV, then you can probably find it in some slick, color advertising brochure which comes in the mail … almost every day. At least it does to my house. If you happen to miss it (because some thief was jealous and stole it from your mailbox, you can probably find it at your local big-box store in the “As Seen on TV” department.

A stop at the wrong house

It is a story from decades ago that I’ve retold countless times. Its punchline--wadded up into a few words--sums up the conundrums that hit us daily with tornadic force.

Allow me, please, to set it up: At a country shack--one that could easily be a “poster house” for poverty--a government guy knocks on the door.

A “mountain man” (or woman) responds with a curt, “Whadda ya want?” greeting. (After all, the ramshackle residence far out in the woods is not easily accessed. No one passes it on the way to town.)…

Russia ran campaign against US oil, gas activity

Russia has been in the news just about every day this year.

The top news story recently involves Russia’s involvement in the 2016 Presidential elections, which was highlighted in a Jan. 6 report issued by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The declassified version of the report, entitled “Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent U.S. Elections,” included an analytic assessment drafted and coordinated among the Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Security Agency.

Things still green in Post Oak

Here it is summer time and the yard is green and lush as spring time.  The rains have made for cooler weather but summer is here now with rising temperatures.  Those 100 degree days will dry things out quickly.

The cats have been lazy and sleep during the warm part of the day and wait to play until it gets cooler in the early evening.  I’m like the cats and would rather work or play in the cool of the evening.
