Me wearing many hats

Wed, 04/21/2021 - 5:00 am

Folks know me best around town as the sports guy, not knowing that I have done some news for the entire time I’ve been here.

Others know me straight for my county work at commissioners court and some area school boards and had no clue I even delved into sports.

Those worlds have melded into one over the last several months, as now I’m doing it all (or trying to in any case). I’ve had some help in to what to focus on and what not to.

That hasn’t helped as folks will let me know when something hasn’t been done or it has been too much. All I can say is I’m doing my best.

One of the things being “discussed” a bunch is the fact there’s no more commissioners court in the paper. That is because I’m usually trying to play catchup from the weekend and writing Friday night sports (I don’t have a home computer or laptop to work over the weekend).

I’m also in charge of making sure everything is edited for spelling now. Computers spellcheck stuff they shouldn’t and aren’t as accurate as you might think. All this is done on Monday as during the week I’m gathering stories, including two nights.

The difference is from before is I was a backup able to handle something if someone needed a hand. My receptionist Sandra does a tremendous job grabbing a pic or two in situations when I can’t, for which I am eternally grateful. She has her own office duties too, however, so she can’t be going to meetings either.

I try to get with Judge Keith Umphress but he has work to do too. He has been receptive to what I’m trying to do and has given me story ideas from time to time. I do need to get back to Commissioners at some point.

All I ask is a bit of patience. I’m a one man show (and will be for a while) and kind of like it to be honest. I’m not perfect and I want to get it right but sometimes things have got to give.

That’s about it for this week.

As always, thanks for reading.

See y’all down the road.
