Stay safe in the heat
You probably don’t need this outdoor scribe to tell you its summertime in Texas and it’s HOT! What do we outdoor types do when mid day temperatures are hot enough to blacken a striper fillet on the sidewalk or cook a berry cobbler in a Dutch oven without any coals! I take a cue from wildlife and move early and late and do my best to seek shade during the middle of the day!
Lions learn about conservation
Jack County’s new conservationist spoke to Jacksboro Lions Club members at the Wednesday, July 12 meeting. Corban Hemphill, who has been here since May, worked in Henrietta before taking the position here.
JISD board approves selling bonds
Jacksboro ISD took another step toward beginning its bond issue construction at its Monday, July 10 board meeting. The board approved selling its bonds in two series, superintendent Brad Burnett explained.
Umphress named Man of the Year
Jack County Judge Keith Umphress was named District 3 Man of the Year by the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association during a Tuesday, July 11 banquet. Umphress has been judge since 2019, and presently serves as chairman of the North Texas Regional Planning Commission, chair of the 271st District Juvenile Justice Committee and president of the Association of Rural Communities of Texas.

When you’ve worked for a year on something, it’s great to see your labor come to fruition. Bryson student Jacie Pennington has spent the last year dreaming up and watching her Ford Leadership Scholar project, an outdoor community center, getting built.
Lake Fork – more than just bass
More than 40 years ago, I penned my first newspaper column and the topic was bass fishing at a brand new trophy largemouth bass reservoir. Lake Fork had just opened and guide Rex Bridges invited me to spend the morning fishing this red hot new bass fishery with him.
Sales tax allocations down
Sales tax allocations made to Jack County cities were down by double figures in the month of May. These allocations are based on sales made in May by businesses that report tax monthly.
Game wardens work July 4
While thousands of Texans and out-ofstate visitors traveled to Texas lakes, rivers and coastal bays to celebrate Fourth of July weekend, Texas Game Wardens were out in force to ensure everyone stayed safe on the water.
