PWCISD increases pay for substitute teachers

Wed, 11/24/2021 - 9:41 am

PERRIN – To aid in hiring more substitute teachers during the current shortage, Perrin-Whitt Consolidated Independent School District’s board of trustees voted to increase substitute pay during its latest regular meeting, Thursday, Nov. 11.

PWCISD Superintendent Cliff Gilmore said the district modeled its changes after what Jacksboro ISD was offering its substitutes. For non-certified substitutes, the daily pay rate went from $60 to $80, and for certified teachers, the rate went from $65 to $90 per day.

Gilmore said that is actually $5 more than what JISD is presently offering.

For long-term subs, which considered longer than two weeks, the rate went from $100 to $125 per day. Gilmore explained the money is a “very small amount and not considered a huge increase.” The pay rate increases go into effect Jan. 1, 2022.

In other news, the FFA Ag Issues team gave its presentation to the board. The team receives points for presenting to outside groups and extra points for speaking to elected officials.

The extra presentations seem to have helped at competitions, as the team has taken first place in San Angelo, Weatherford, and at its recent district competition. The team competed in Abilene at the area competition Monday, Nov. 22, offering the team a chance to appear at the state competition, held Dec. 3 and Dec. 4. Results were not available as of press time.
