Pippin 5K run, skeet shoot scheduled for Saturday

It’s the simple things that mean a lot.

At last year’s Bailey Pippin Memorial 5K Run and Skeet Shoot, the auctioneer asked everyone who had received a scholarship or any family members of those who had received a scholarship to come into the center of the area. Bailey’s mom, Callie, remembers the time vividly.

“Just seeing it brought back tears as there must have been 40-50 people who had been helped by what we’re doing,” Callie said. “It just about brought me to my knees and did bring on some tears.”

The 7th annual Bailey Pippin Memorial 5K Run and Skeet Shoot begins at 7 a.m. and will run all day Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Jermyn Community Center.

Pippin passed away in 2013 and Callie remembers how her son had a giving heart, which is part of the reason all the Saturday festivities will be going on.

“If anyone was in need, he would go out and try and fix it,” Callie said. “That will be his legacy.”

She estimates giving away nearly $100,000 in scholarships and other money during that time.

Last year about $30,000 was raised, with $26,000 raised the year before. About 400 people attended last year’s event.

The event opens at 7:30 a.m. with the 5K run. The first year had about 80 runners, but has steadily dropped off since then. The cost is $35 for adults and includes a t-shirt. For children five and under, the cost is $5.

The skeet shoot begins at 9 a.m. and remains very popular. The cost is $20 per shooter.

Events which have picked up steam is the 10 a.m. volleyball tournament, which had 15 teams in 2020. Four-person, co-ed teams must have at least one girl on the court at all times. Cost is $100 per team.

The corn hole tournament will begin at noon and costs $50 per team, with the winners receiving half the pot. Callie said last year was the first year for the event and it just exploded. She is hoping the popularity stands.

Registration for all the events begins at 7 a.m. at the center. Concessions, including breakfast burritos, sausage wraps and biscuits will be served throughout the day.

There will be no dance this year, but music will be played starting around 7 p.m.

“That will be free and we’re encouraging folks to come out and dance their heart out,” Callie said.

T-shirts will also be sold at the event for $25.
