One down, one to go Work on first responder park beginning

Wed, 04/21/2021 - 5:00 am

Eugene Weldon had a plan of building two memorials honoring both veterans and first responders. He had the first built and dedicated in 2018 when the military portion was completed.

Work has begun on the first responder portion near the veteran memorial behind the Chamber of Commerce building, Weldon said. He spoke to the Jacksboro Lions Club April 14 and said with a dedication date of Sept. 11, funding is needed to complete the project which will run along Lost Creek.

A 17-inch concrete rock wall has been laid down with first responder plaques all along the inside. A brick walkway and inside the rock wall with names of first responders will be placed similar to the military memorial.

A belltower, Weldon said, will be placed in the middle of it. He hopes to have the same beauty and tourist reach of the veterans memorial with the first responder memorial. Bricks, which help pay for the facility, can now be purchased by going online to jackcountymemorial.com.

In other news, Lion Joe Mitchell spoke about the impact the HandiLion program is having. Mitchell and several other Lions have worked on four projects with one pending and one needing some additional help. Mitchell said one of the people had brush nearby and was grateful for having it removed.
