Moon tree planted at LLE site

Wed, 12/09/2020 - 5:00 am

At a ceremony honoring veterans and the Roosa Family by planting a moon tree at the Jacksboro Lunar Landscape Experience site.

Before joining the Air Force, Stuart Roosa had worked as a U.S. Forest Service smoke-jumper where he developed his passion for trees. When selected for the Apollo 14 mission, Roosa was allowed to carry approximately 500 tree seeds with him into space. We will be planting a first generation sycamore from one of those seeds that went to the moon on Apollo 14.

Jack Roosa, son of Stuart Roosa, along with Mike Smith, Jacksboro City Manager, will be planting the sycamore moon tree during the ceremony. Lieutenant Colonel Roosa USAF (Ret) is a decorated combat veteran – logging 80 combat missions, a graduate of the US Air Forces Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun).

During his career, Jack was awarded a number of military awards, to include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Presidential Unit Citation Award with Valor, and the Combat Service Medal. Roosa will be joined by Jacksboro City Manager and Lieutenant Colonel USAF (Ret) Mike Smith. Lieutenant Colonel Smith was awarded the coveted Bronze Star for meritorious and heroic service in Iraq and has played a major role in bringing the Lunar Landscape to Jacksboro.
