Jack County fire destroys 2,600 acres

Wed, 08/19/2020 - 5:00 am

The Pendleton park fire, which destroyed more than 2,600 acres of Palo Pinto and Jack County land was fully contained late last week.

Jack County Emergency Management Coordinator Frank Hefner said the fire began Monday afternoon out near Graford but with the dry air and hot temperatures, moved quickly north into Jack County.

“We also had a lot of rain last Spring and the Fall before,” Hefner said. “It may look green around here but we have a lot of dead, dry underbrush around here.”

Hefner said the fire burned south of Rock Creek Road and west of Halsa Ranch Road east of FM 1191. No injuries were reported but one barn and its contents were totally destroyed.

All active flames were put out Wednesday but some flareups were reported into Thursday. Hefner said with the amount of open land in that area, the fire burned quick and hot. Departments from Perrin, Jacksboro and Jack County Rural worked on the fire in the county, Hefner said.
