Hospital partners with school to add programs

Tue, 11/08/2016 - 1:49 pm

Jacksboro High School and Faith Community Hospital are taking steps to give students some hands-on learning opportunities..

The hospital is supporting education initiatives for the school and community.

Principal Brad Burnett said the hospital’s IT Coordinator Ben McKay met with interested students for an introduction to an afternoon workshop to teach them information technology.

Coming up, the school will offer cooking classes with Faith Cafe chef Cathy Warnell at the hospital. Burnett said 18 students recently completed a food safety certification through a partnership between the school and Jack County AgriLife Extension.

There will also be a job shadowing day February 20 and Burnett said school and hospital staff are working on setting some guidelines for it.

The hospital is also bringing a character education program to both the high school and middle school called “Measured By Character” in January.

Also, the Area Health Education Center is sending a representative to give a presentation to the high school anatomy class about the services the organization provides and different health employment opportunities.

Also coming up in the spring semester, the hospital will present Project Beautiful for high school- and middle school-aged girls offering confidence-building along with tips on fashion and dating.

“I think these offerings are a good opportunity for kids. I wish we’d have more students take advantage of it,” Burnett said. “The cooperation we’re having with the hospital helps provided career-related experiences for kids.

“I really wan to applaud the hospital for doing their part to support education in the community and working hard to develop a partnership with the school district.”
