Bryson ISD’s Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Slade Egan resigned to take a post in Mineral Wells. His resignation was announced during the regular June 20 meeting.

Egan was with the district for two years and also was head basketball coach. He will be first assistant basketball boys basketball coach and coach the offensive line for the Ram football team.

BISD Superintendent Greg London said the district would be interviewing two candidates later in the week but the final candidate would be met by the board and approved by them.

In other news:

• Principal Gary Kirby said initial STAAR scores are in and there were some positives including in both English I and II where 81 percent passed the test in the former and 100 percent in the latter. Kirby said the outgoing fifth grade group appears to have turned the corner thanks to some hard work on both the students and teachers. The district’s new focus will be the incoming 8th graders.

District staff is beginning to see problems in the lower grades so they will be breaking children out into smaller groups with the fourth and fifth graders needing help being worked with during eighth period with second and third graders worked with during 7th period. London said students will get two days of English and two days of math assistance.

• Board members approved continuing to pay for employee health insurance (TRS Active Care I) to the tune of $417/month per employee. The cost did not go up for the district but costs may rise due to another employee potentially picking up the insurance, London said,

• After much discussion, board members approved giving teachers with 21-30 years experience an additional $500 a year up to their 30th year, a three-percent raise for janitorial and paraprofessional staff, and approved additional stipends for both the FCCLA and robotics sponsor.

The next meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, July 18.
