BISD examines TAPR, Friday early releases

The Bryson ISD board held a public hearing on their 2018-2019 Texas Academic Performance Report and discussed possible changes to Friday early releases in their meeting Feb. 14.

No citizens participated in the public hearing and Superintendent Greg London went over the report with the board members in attendance.

“I think the thing that stood out with me was that junior high English and junior high math (scores), I think in all but one area, they went up,” London said.

He said English I scores were also up. He highlighted the school’s student success initiative which was above the state average.

“Industry based certificates, this is what we’re going for right now,” London said. “We have had zero the past two years, that’s what we’re trying to do now to help us be okay on our CCMR component.”

London said they are still focusing on how to use the 2 p.m. early release on Friday’s as a beneficial tool for all students and teachers.

“Our failure list is just full of kids who shouldn’t be on there,” London said. “There is still a general feel of apathy at the secondary level that we have got to find something for those that can to get off of there.”

He said they are examining an option where students who are failing multiple subjects or have failed the same subject multiple times will be required to stay at school on Fridays from 2 to 3 p.m.

“What we’re going to tell them ‘this isn’t punitive, we want you to be successful and pass,’” London said. “They’re gonna hear ‘I gotta stay here on Friday, I’m going to get it done.’”

The superintendent said he is unsure when or if the district will roll out the new Friday plan.
