By virtue of a “very focused performance” Saturday, Jacksboro High’s band qualified for Area competition this weekend.

It was the second time in the last three years the Purple Pride Band qualified for regionals. Their regional performance is set for 3:45 p.m. Saturday at the Collins Complex in Denton.

Part of that focus may have come from a less than thrilling performance the previous night.

“The night before’s performance (at the football game) was not even close to the same quality as what we did Saturday,” JHS Band Director Patrick Flaniken said. “We’re just not used to performing on grass. It can be very uneven and throw you off. Grass fields hurt your marching. Going from grass to turf is easier than from turf to grass.”

The band, knowing it would be performing on a turf field at Ram Stadium in Mineral Wells, did a run-through Saturday morning at Tiger Stadium to get a better feeling of what to expect.
