Cowboys return to baseball playoffs

The Bryson Cowboys (7-9) are back in the playoffs after splitting games in the final week of the regular season, winning 5-1 at home against Saint Jo on April 22 and falling 12-2 at Perrin-Whitt on April 24.

Tigerettes advance in postseason

In what has become an annual event the Jacksboro Tigerettes (19-13) once again advanced in the Class 3A softball playoffs, sweeping Tolar (13-9) in their best-of-three Division I series in Brock this past week, 11-1 and 12-6.

The Tigerettes have now reached at least the second round in six consecutive seasons. They were playing Wall (25-5) in the first two games of a best-of-three series in Eula at press time, with a third game, if necessary, also in Eula Monday, May 4 at 6 p.m.

Pirates, Lady Pirates advance plenty to regional track

Led by Luchese Reilly, the Perrin-Whitt Lady Pirates and Pirates will have 14 athletes (7 girls, 7 boys) advancing to the Class 1A Region III Track and Field Meet at Waco Midway on May 1-2. They qualified from the Area 17/18-1A Meet at Forestburg on April 20.

Reilly qualified individually by winning the long jump and was part of the first place 4x200-meter relay. She also ran on the second place 4x400 relay and the third place 4x100 relay.

Cowboys, Cowgirls qualify 11 for regional track

Bryson will be well represented at the Class 1A Region III Track and Field Meet. Four Cowgirls and seven Cowboys qualified from the Area 17/18-1A Meet in Forestburg on April 20.

For the Cowboys, Wiett Newton advanced in five events, finishing second in the high jump, third in the long jump, fourth in the 400 and as part of the third place 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Keeney has giant night on mound and at plate

Cole Keeney accomplished one of baseball’s rarest events in Perrin-Whitt’s 16-0 victory against visiting Bryson on April 10. He hit for the cycle.

Keeney had a single, double, triple and home run in his four hits. He drove in a half dozen runs and also stole a base.

He also pitched a one-hitter over four innings to get the victory. He struck out six and walked one.

Also for the Pirates: Travis Welch 2 hits, RBI, walk; Joe Welch hit, 3 RBI; Case Lambert hit, stolen base; Slade Donegan hit, hit by pitch; Noah Morris 2 walks, stolen base.

Cowgirls win wild contest

In a game with a score that more closely resembled a football outcome, the Bryson Cowgirls blasted host DeLeon 31-17 on April 14.

The teams combined for 48 runs and 29 hits. Ironically, they committed only one error between them - by DeLeon.

The Cowgirls (6-6) also had an incredible 40 stolen bases in 43 attempts, including nine by Katie Schiffbauer and six each by Khloey Reddell and Shelby Neer. Reddell also had a half dozen base hits and drove in a handful of runs.

Tigerettes, Tigers qualify plenty for area track

The Jacksboro Tigerettes (11) and Tigers (5) combined to qualify 16 athletes for area competition from the District 7-3A Track and Field Meet April 8-9 at Holliday.

Emory Inman and Holly Lehman of the Tigerettes led all qualifiers, each advancing in four events. Inman qualified with a gold medal in the long jump, a silver in the 200-meter dash and a bronze in the 100, along with being part of the runner-up 4x100 relay. Lehman won gold in the triple jump and a bronze in the long jump, while she was also part of the 4x100 and runner-up 4x200 relays.

Cowboy golfers win district

The Bryson Cowboys shot a 372 to win the District 17-1A Golf Tournament played at the Archer City Country Club on April 1. They edged runner-up Newcastle by seven shots.

Team scores are comprised of the four lowest individual scores in each round.

Both teams will advance to the Class 1A Region III Tournament April 13-14 at Mount Pleasant Country Club in Mount Pleasant.

Bryson was led by Brody Hawkins, who shot an 82 to place third overall individually. Right behind was Hudson Fisher with an 83 for fourth.

Jacksboro cheerleaders honored by TGCA

Several members of the Jacksboro spirit squad have been named Class 3A All-State and Academic All-State by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. All of those receiving accolades are seniors.

Named all-state are Madison Collins, Allison Garcia, Ashleigh Guthrie, Kennedy Lowther and Lileigh Taylor. Guthrie and Taylor were also named academic all-state, along with Jasmine Soria.
