Birdwell made Nortex chair

Mayor Sheila Birdwell of Bryson has been elected as the chair of Nortex Regional Planning Commission for the next year. The executive committee of Nortex Regional Planning Commission at its regular monthly board meeting in September elected Birdwell to serve in this capacity for the commission. Other officer appointments for the upcoming year include Judge Karl Holloway of Cottle County as vice-chair, Mayor Howard Raeke of Henrietta as secretary and Judge Rick Lewis of Montague County as past chair.

Alcohol sales decision tabled for Tiger Mart

he Jacksboro Board of Zoning Adjustment approved one sale of alcoholic beverages variance and tabled another at its meeting last week.

Three members of the BZA were in attendance for the meeting in which two businesses — Tiger Mart and the not-yet-opened JR’s Chophouse, requested variances be granted to allow for the sale of alcohol within 300 feet of a child care facility or school.

After the meeting was called to order, City Manager Mike Smith told the board the 300-foot rule is measured property line to property line in the case of schools and daycares. 

County continues work on communications

Commissioners opted Monday to continue trying to upgrade communication between road hands out in the county.

Spending $20,430 on a repeater, which will allow commissioners and their road hands to communicate with each other, was approved. The repeater is the same one both the sheriff’s office and fire departments both use for communication out in the field.

Hospital recognizes first responder

As part of Monday night’s regular Faith Community Hospital board meeting, FCH’s John Moffit was honored by a Dallas-Fort Worth area church for his work during an April incident involving their pastor.

Robert Morris, pastor of Gateway Church based in Southlake, explained he had suffered a massive hematoma in his stomach where two arteries had ruptured while at his Jack County ranch April 8. Before he even arrived at the ranch, Moffit made the call to have a helicopter ready.

It was that call that may have saved Morris’ life.

Crash claims life of firefighter

A Jack County volunteer firefighter was killed in a crash Wednesday morning.

While off duty, Jan Russel “Rusty” Cook, 57, was traveling south on Hwy. 59 about 20 miles north of Jacksboro when the 2018 Dodge Caravan Russel was driving was struck by a 2017 Ford F-150 driven by Colby Charles Cosper, 35, of Clifton.

Clifton was traveling north when his pickup crossed the center stripe while trying to negotiate a hill with a curve in the highway. Cook was unable to make an evasive maneuver as the vehicles crested the hill.

Sales tax holiday coming up Aug. 10-12

Whether you’re in need of book bags, blackboard chalk or bell-bottom pants, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is reminding shoppers they can save money on those and certain other items during the state’s sales tax holiday. This year, the sales tax holiday is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10-12.

The law exempts most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced below $100 from sales tax, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend during the weekend.

Pruitt gets 35 years

Clarification: In the July 27 edition of the Herald-Gazette, the article “Trial begins in death of teen” references Jordan Pruitt’s testimony as her having said Zach Hamm went to the Pruitt residence and tried to wake up Trey at 10:30 a.m. on the day of his death. 

Jordan did say 10:30 a.m., but according to DA investigator Jack McGuinn, Jordan was mistaken in her testimony and was later asked while on the stand if she meant 2:30 p.m. to which she answered yes.
