VB sweeps Newcastle

NEWCASTLE – The Class A Lady ‘Cats provided just what Jacksboro needed after two losses to Class 4A schools: a very competitive battle before falling to the visitors 25-19, 25-21, 25-23 Tuesday evening.

Jacksboro got out of the gate quickly in game one with Baylee Anderson and Morgyn Green combining to get the Purple out to a 6-2 lead. Newcastle would get within two before a Kellyn Mitchell ace and a Leah Plaster pair, aided by a Baylee Thompson block put the visitors up 11-5.

Jboro looks to extend win streak

hile Jacksboro Coach Brian Hodnett never went to school here, he also knows a bit about tradition. Back in his playing days, he embraced tradition by wearing the same uniform number as his dad and brother.

As a 6th-year head coach, Hodnett’s charges have become a major part of the Tiger tradition after Friday’s 58-6 season-opening win in Olney. Hodnett, who shared a uniform number with not only his brother but his dad back in the day.

Opening night of football season is here, ladies and gents.

It’s the 99th season of Jacksboro football, which has been going on since 1914 (except for three years during WWI). Jacksboro is hanging on the cusp of history tonight, as the squad has won 499 games to this point.

Jacksboro, Bryson hold final FB scrimmages

Jacksboro and Bryson had their final football scrimmages last week n preparation for this weekend’s season opener. Perrin cancelled its scrimmage because of a death in the Pirate football family.

The Tigers traveled to Santo to face the Wildcats. Coach Brian Hodnett said he saw improvement overall from the team as a whole.

“I thought we looked much better against Santo,” Hodnett stated. “Other than one busted assignment, the defense looked awesome.”

Jacksboro girls end up in Iowa Park talons

With the Jacksboro varsity volleyball team looking at a month-long road trip following Tuesday’s home date with Iowa Park, it would have been nice to hit the road with a win under their belts.

The Lady Hawks had other ideas, avenging a three-game loss to the Tigerettes at home last year with a hard-fought 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 win. The two teams got into a battle from the opening serve.

Going around the county

Winding my way through the county right now.

It’s the time of year where I prepare and get everything together for my Fall Sports Tab, which comes out next Friday, Aug. 26. It will have lots of information on the Jack County schools and their football, volleyball and cross country teams.

For further details, see the Aug. 19 Herald-Gazette.
