Tigers win bi-district opener over City View, 55-35

Getting in a 14-0 hole five minutes into a game can wreck a game plan. Getting out of it shows nothing but character.

Jacksboro did both Friday, Nov. 11 in its Class 3A Division II bi-district match-up with Wichita Falls City View, getting the game tied back up at the half and then wasting little time in taking the lead for good in the third quarter of a 55-35 Tiger win at Ram Stadium.

Jacksboro moves into area round action against the Gunter Tigers (11-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17 at Mustang-Panther Stadium in Grapevine. Sendoff will be at 1 p.m.

After wiping out the aforementioned deficit, it took the Tigers just 13 seconds to take the lead for good in the second half. Luke Sams caught a 59-yard pass from Lando Belcher for the score on the first play from scrimmage. Randall Bustos split the upright on the extra point to give the Purple its first lead at 35-28.

The squads exchanged punts before Jacksboro picked up an insurance score as Belcher went up the gut and went untouched on a 34-yard scoring run with 5:17 left in the third.

City View held tough, marching to the Tiger 11 on its next possession before turning the ball over on downs. The Tiger defense continued to hang tough, getting a Paul Shackelford interception on the next Mustang drive and turning that into points.

Jacksboro marched 76 yards in three plays, Sams this time doing the damage on a 57yard run with 9:16 to go to extend the lead to 48-28.

City View got the touchdown barely a minute later with a 76yard drive of its own. A 50-yard Keshawn Perry jaunt set up his oneyard scoring run three plays later.

Belcher ended the scoring with 2:01 to go with a 16-yard run on a broken play.

The game started positively as Tyler Mitchell recovered an onside kick on the kickoff. An interception three plays later from Desmond Whiteside set up the first Mustang score a 29-yard run from Jeremiah Durham with 7:52 left in the first.

Barely a minute later, a short punt was caught by Whiteside on the ensuing drive and returned 20 yards for another score to extend the lead to 14-0. Another interception set the Mustangs in the driver’s seat to put the game away early but a turnover on downs on the ensuing drive gave Jacksboro the ball at its 47.

Sams, who rushed for 135 yards, capped the six-play drive with a one-yard run trimming the deficit to 147. City View would go up 21-7 but the Tigers would use long scoring passes to Shackelford (64 yards) and Cannon Valenzuela (67 yards) barely three minutes apart to knot the game at 21.

Durham’s 7-yard run would give City View its last lead with 1:56 left in the half. The Tigers would take advantage of a fumble recovery on a lateral to gain new life. The 42-yard drive would culminate on a 19-yard pass to a wide open Kasey Ray Swan with just 14 seconds left in the half.
